who stopped to help us (me) out about lunchtime between Malham & Arncliffe,

Thanks for your assistance. I still don't know what was causing the bike to screech, but we got back to Skipton OK.

    I thought that too, not least as it was worse going downhill & went away when I pedalled. However, when I got to the bike shop it was behaving again, & the hub seemed to be turning smoothly - the shop have got it in to have a look at. All very odd.
