Well I've narrowed it down to 4!

Hi all, been lurking for a while but first post.
I am a 45 year old recent convert to cycling to try and get some fitness back after having to finally accept that an old calf injury will no longer allow me to run. Got myself a Spesh Allez to knock off the rough edges (and weight) on and have built up from a few miles regular commute to my first London to Cambridge in the summer. You know what comes next don't you? Yes I have totally got the bug and am looking towards my next steed! I have narrowed it down to the Condor Baracchi RL, Ribble Sportive Racing, Planet X SL Pro Carbon and the Wilier Mortirolo. I will never be racing on it but will look to do some nice rides next summer (the Ventoux has been mentioned although very quietly). Anyway i would welcome any feedback as to how they ride, I will of course, with the possible exception of the Ribble, give them all a go but something might crop up on here that narrows the list down even more. Not bothered about spec at the moment just how the frame behaves with a 6ft 14st idiot like me on board.
Thanks in advance for any light that you can throw on the situation.

  • Similar situation for me last year- again looking to 'graduate' from my Spesh Allez. I had my heart set on a Wilier Mortirolo, and went to test ride one before parting with my cash. I actually found it didn't suit my riding style - I found it rather fidgety. I ended up with a Viner Magnifica instead, which has since taken me to all extremes of the country. I've been really pleased with it.

The important point for me was that the bikes I tested felt very different from each other on a test ride. I found it invaluable to actually try them for half an hour each. What might be right for a reviewer or for another rider won't necessarily be right for you.

Not sure that helps with your decision, but that was my experience. Have fun choosing.

  • I'd recommend you try before you buy, and see what you think, although I was in a similar situation to you and bought a Planet X SL PRO Carbon, with Ultegra SL and a compact chain set (every little helps).

I decided on the PX as I could custom it to how I wanted it. For me that was the right decision.
  • If you can get down to Croydon there is a PlanetX stockist down there:
    www.gbcycles.co.uk
I hadn't noticed this buried at the bottom of the distributors page on their web site when I was in buying mode.
  • Thanks for the answers so far, I'm already planning a trip to GB in Croydon. 8) Anyone had any experience with the Condor bike, what are they like in general. I am saying this as Condor Cycles is only a few stops on the tube from me.
  • Before I got the PX I went to GB and they had none in, I got the impression that the relationship wasn't good. RIng GB first to check if you decide to go.

Defiantly go to Condor, the more you actually look at or even try them better idea you'll have of what you really want.
