Dead Edge 205

I did the Bealach Mor sportive at the weekend and (very annoyingly) after about 25 miles in the rain it died. It now has about a teaspoon of water sitting on the inside of the screen that doesn't seem to want to come out.

Anyone else had this problem and if so how were Garmin with regard repairing or replacing it? Mine is outside its warranty, but given that its supposed to be able to withstand being submerged in water then I must have a duff one surely.

Thanks.

  • Garmin weren't very helpful when mine started to turn off while I was riding, It was only one month out of warranty.
Have a look on the motion based forums, most problems have been overcome by somebody.

Just got a reply from them suggesting I do a master reset and update the software. I did mention that it was still full of water and wouldn't switch on!

  • is it full of water or is it just condensation on the screen?
If it's full of water you need to get it open and dried ASAP.

If it's out of warranty, Garmin will replace the unit with a brand new one for about £45. Perhaps not ideal if you were after a warranty replacement, but better than buying a new one in the shops. Speak to the Garmin Europe service desk people, who are very helpful. If it's only just out of warranty, I guess they might even be able to discuss a deal with you. I didn't even try it on, as mine died after well over a year of constant abuse.

Its got a fair bit of water in it, not just condensation, but to be honest I don't see the point in drying it out just so it can fill up again when I take it out in the rain next. These things are supposed to be waterproof in 1m water for 30 minutes or something so it shouldn't be leaking on my bike in the rain. I don't know how to open it up anyway.

  • I'd second the helpfulness of Garmin. I had a Geko 201 which came off worse in a prang, the screen was totally knackered and the casing was heavily scarred.
£50 later a brand new unit arrived.

Edge has gone back to Garmin. After the silly original email I've been quite impressed with the service - emails always replied to the same day. Fingers crossed I still have good things to say next week after I find out how much this could end up costing me.

I've just spoken to Garmin about my 205; the one they will send you is a refurbished unit with 12 months warranty, its not brand new.

The one they sent me was brand-new, or at least indistinguishable from brand-new, and it's got a 12 month warranty. So I really wouldn't let that put you off!
