Problem with Hayes Stroker Ryde brakes

I have a problem with my Hayes Stroker Ryde front brake.

While cleaning my bike the other day I accidently pulled the brake lever while the wheel was off and the brake pads moved toghether making it impossible to refit the wheel.

I did like described in the manual i.e. removed the pads, pushed back the pistons with the box end of a 9mm spanner and finally refitted the pads and wheel.

When I turned the wheel before touching the brake lever it ran freely without any sound but after the first time braking an annoying sound occured. It seemed like the inner pad was still touching the rotor after I released the lever.

I have since repeated the whole opereaion but with the same result.

Whether it is because the piston does not go back or whether it is because the pad does not follow the piston back I do not know. I suspect the latter since the wheel can still roll relatively freely - it just makes a sound while doing it. What should make the pads follow the pistons back upon brake release? There is no spring - are the pistons magnetic?

What can be done? My bike brakes perfectly alright. Should I just learn to live with the sound?

Any help appreciated - thank you very much!

have you followed the resetting the pads/pistons info?

    now realign the caliper.

now go ride the bike and the pads will settle down.

  • Forgive me - I am just rookie and it's my first MTB.

I have done as described above i.e. pushed the pistons back as far as they could go. Is that what you mean by resetting?

I have also checked that the rotor is exact in the middle of caliper opening - so no realigning needed, right?

What drags the pad away from the rotor when the brake is releases when there is no spring ?- are the pistons magnetic in Stroker Ryde brakes?

Maybe I should just go for a ride and see if pads will settle down?

    Thanks very much ...

Pulling the lever a few times so that the pistons/pads are in the right place.

center of the caliper or the pistons?

as the wheel spins relatively freely yes use it and things will settle down.
