My shorts are red and black, plenty of shorts that are not black, Assos do coloured shorts too.

Best colour though IMO, it's slimming and makes you look like a ninja.
  • you could always decorate them in stick on twinkly stars or glitter :D

Know what you mean, Assos, castelli and giordana do white shorts, but are fairly expensive. I wear all black sometimes, all I lack are Ninja throwing stars. 8)
  • White shorts would be very nice during the hotter season. However, I guess it's just one of those generic occurrences that has caught on for so long it would be quite strange to start manufacturing a variety of colors. Of course, when the mobile phone came out in a variety of colors people started purchasing them more. Same goes for the game boy pocket and it's variety of unique colors  .

A cycle club near me has all purple shorts
  • White shorts look good when the suns out and you've got tanned legs - the slightest bit of rain and the road spray makes you look like you didn't get to the pan in time, and they go almost transparent
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

I couldn't wear my white and black Gore stuff in the wet, but in the dry I think it looks as good as lycra can on me. I may have to get some of the Endura coloured ones for next summer as they are reasonably cheap and I know I get on with them for 50-60 mile rides.

I've posted warnings re. the whole wet weather/semi-visible buttocks issue in the past. Pale shorts best avoided at all costs, black all the way for me. If nothing else, usually cheaper than other colours and much wider (as in 'easier to buy', not a comment on waist sizes) availability.

It is all about perception, in the technical sense. You don't see the outline of black.

That doesn't matter if you're a wiry little climber, but with an 8rse the size of mine, anything other than black atop my seatpost and you've got a spacehopper on a stick!

i find filing down the cogs from old cassettes works and you can have 9 speed versions.

  • Historically they were black to hide oil etc as it got all over the place back in the day.

Companies like Assos do various colours of shorts but unless you are racing and you are sponsored (Colombia) I can see no reason for a grown man to ever wear white shorts.

Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Wonder why Jan couldn't get a black helmet too? Might as well go all the way.

Struggle? I have royal blue, and also black with wide light-grey stripes on their outer sides, both just from Aldi.

Not exactly twinkly stars, but I also have black shorts with lots small off-white rubbery dimples on their outer sides. I think the looks and feel of them good. Not Aldi this time, but I can’t remember the brand.

Unfortunately, the average male Brit is scared of much or different colour. :(
A few years ago when in Italy, I bought bib shorts in purple there; they looked great (unfortunately since worn out and discarded).

I’ve red shorts too, really bright. I feel stronger when wearing them – they have a hidden psychological bonus!
  • What's wrong with coloured shorts?, I've got several pairs to match different coloured jerseys including a white pair.........................I've even got a pair of these http://www.prendas.co.uk/details.asp?typ=typ&fkid=5&ID=2344

Come on people, be honest. It is British conservatism and fear of attracting unwanted comments.

As per your title "black shorts - why only black?" It is my understanding that that the color black(if it really is a color) has never came in any color other than black. i.e. if it came in red it would be called red and not black.

There must be a market for 'comedy' cycle shorts somewhere with a pair of bum cheeks screen-printed on to the behind.....

I have also noticed that some people don't know when their shorts are starting to wear a bit thin in the rear, thus making some "THINGS" disturbingly visible.
