Can anyone tell me do easton ea50 sl wheels (rear) make a medium loud clicking sound when freewheeling? I have certainly heard other brands that are much noiser and others that are quieter. When i first got them i didn't notice any sound until i had used them about 3 or 4 times, but in hindsight it might have been that i never stopped peddaling
cheers.

It's normal when freewheeling. Can't remember why, I think it's the device in the wheel that locks when it goes one way, so you can move the wheel, and freewheeling it sort of just pushes over it, like the imagine you sliding your finger on a button with a slant on it, it'd just go right over pushing it down.

    What Hubs?

Apparently Campag Hubs are reknown for it.

I had some older Campag Record Hubs that weren't too bad, my newer Record Hubs are real loud and when I mentioned it to my LBS they told me that you can always tell in a group who rides campag and who rides Shimano by the noise!.

Brand new hubs can be quieter than ones that have been used.

as the grease in the drive system is spread out the volume can increase.

Learn to enjoy the music and use it as a handy way of alerting pedestrians of your approach on quiet country lanes. People have been spoilt by virtually silent freehubs, the old screw on blocks were all fairly loud and it was even regarded as the sign of a healthy pawl and ratchet mechanism. Silence usually preceeded failure.
  • the clicking from your hubs is the springs forcing the pawls into the locking mechanism on each revoulution, the reason different hubs sound different are different spring tensions on the pawls, i.e very firm spring = very loud click softer spring = quiter click, hope that helps

    Thanks all :D -

mind will now be back in state of zen-like calm as i peddle instead of worrying about
hubs devoid of grease or with wrongly tensioned springs
