Entry level XC forks

I'm looking around for forks, that would suit my entry level taste. Nothing fancy, but nothing that will brake after a few rides. I noticed many good replies about Dart 1, obviously only good for beginners but i'm not too picky at this stage. Anything else that could be recommended? I will be mostly aiming to find used ones, that way i could probably get a bargain

Rock shox tora's
They can be had for a few more quid and a 1000 times better than darts0 -
tip noted. What would be a realistic price to get them 2nd hand? Building a bike at this particular moment and looking for 1 1/8 forks to fit my GT XC-2 frame.Giant Yukon FX30

Whats you budget?
I am sure you can get 2008 toras for about 100.00
You will be glad you did not buy the darts, they are heavy, and dont do much.0 -
Im trying to keep as low as possible, so far i'm able to keep my total budget under £300 to make a good entry level XC bike. I think 100 for the forks might be over my limit.Giant Yukon FX30

using the wise words of doddy here re: suspension forks "buy cheap, buy twice".
the toras are miles ahead of the darts and you will reach the end of the darts capabilities fairly quickly..... meaning you will want to upgrade fairly soon.0 -
Dart 1 is absolutely terrible.
The Dart 3 is much better, but still not as good as a Tora.0 -
Plus the longer you leave it to xmas time the better the chance of getting the right deal on a Tora.0

Hm...i'm hesitating...so far i have:
GT XC-2 frame
Seat
Seatpost
Truvativ Crankset
Bottom Bracket (i think it's shimano, havent taken it out yet)
Many thing left to buy, but i only spent £90 so far...Just don't know what to do next...I'm guessing it should be forks, but i hardly can find anything in my budget limits, and still so many thing to buy. That's one big plus with building a bike - buy when you can...Giant Yukon FX30 -
Have a look at this:

Maybe of some use for budget parts!
You have to make sure the parts you get fit, ie is the crankset you have compatible with that bottom bracket, and is the axle length correct? Makesure you get the correct headset type.0 -
BB and crank are fine because they came assembled on frame already. I know close to nothing on headsets, reading up as we speak. That's what worries me most so far.Giant Yukon FX30

Have a look in the FAQ for the headset standards. Most likely yours takes a ZeroStack. What exact model and year is it?
What budget do you have for forks?0 -
I guessed it was ZeroStack. It is a 2007 (if remember right) GT Aggresssor XC.2Giant Yukon FX30

I think it is yes. CRC have some for about 20 quid. Buit you'll need tools to fit it.0

What tools and how much will they cost me? Another set back...Giant Yukon FX30

A headset press. Though you can bodge one!0

Hopefully there is someone in Colchester to help me out with this
Well so far according to you guys, my best options are:
Rockshox Tora
Marzocchi 22r
will keep a close eye out for them.Giant Yukon FX30 -
I'd have the Tora over the Zocchi ideally, but the cheap Toras seem to have dried up.0

What steerer length do i need? And how do i find out?Giant Yukon FX30

Headtube length plus headset stack height plus stem height (plus spacers).
They come with 260mm as standard usually, and you cut them down. Cut long, and use an inch of spacers or so for tuning.0 -
can you jack the entire front end up using spacers underneath the head tube? if yes, what kind of gear d'you need.0

There's always loads of used Toras washing around on Ebay etc... And often low mileage too, from people who've bought a bike then quickly upgraded. Really nice forks though.Uncompromising extremist0
