Nobby Nic Blowout Problems

I have just bought a Nobby Nic Triple Evo Compound USt 26x2.1 tyre and it has blown out on me TWICE !! Anyone got any ideas as I am coming very close to chucking it in the bin. I originally fitted it using Stans No Tubes to a XC717 Mavic - did about ten miles on it and put the bike in the shed. Next day I found sealant all over the floor and the tyre blown off of the rim despite it being really tight to put on the rim in the first place. Then I thought I would put a tube in it ( I dont like em but wanted to give the tyre a chance) went for a quick couple of miles just to see how it felt and came home and leant the bike up in the back garden. Five minutes later a big bang and there is the tyre off of the rim and a brand new inner tube in pieces hanging out everywhere. It had 40psi in it and has done less than 15miles and has gone twice. Im fed up !! Any ideas or help ??? :?

Are you sure it was at 40psi (and that's still a bit high).

Did you blow it off the rim/put the pressure up past 60ish when you were sealing it?

    How much do you weigh?
  • It took hardly anything to seal it - I did use a high volume compressor but I just cannot understand why it would blow off 'overnight' after a ride and then the same happen again but when I have put a tube in it. I weigh 15stone and have always ran my tyres at 40psi with no problems. The Nobby Nic replaces a Conti Speed King that took forever to seal and I have ran that all spring and summer at 40psi - I have never seen this with a tyre before. Its almost like there is some kind of chemical reaction going on that is creating or expanding gas and causing the blowoff but why would it do it with a tube as well ???

If its just one tyre, it may just be a faulty one. Send it back, get a replacement.

When you squeeze it, did it feel like 40psi?
  • I've had problems with Racing Ralphs and Stans solution. Every so often a tiny hole appears in the sidewall which lets some air out but then the solution seals it. Later, another hole appears in a different place and so on until there is not enough pressure to force any more holes. This process is probably due to the solution weakening the tyre. In extreme cases, it can destroy the tyre:

Stans don't recommend Kenda tyres at all for use with their solution because of this reaction.

My nobby nics developed splits all over the show, though I was using tubes, the walls are just too thin on that brand of tyre, simple as that.

Which is a shame cos they are dam fast.

40psi shouldn't be a problem as they can take 60 IIRC.

It depends how you use them. My Schwalbe tyres have all lasted ages and can't be faulted except that they seem susceptible to chemical attack by Stans solution. Personally I wouldn't use any other brand.

Something I noticed on the NoTubes website is that Stans recommend a maximum tyre pressure of 35psi.
  • I have thrown it in the bin - I have a Racing Ralph on the front which is under the same conditions - 40psi, Stans Sealant, its on a DT4.2 rim but its coping just fine. I really dont know what to put on the back now - I am tempted to get another RR or NN and take a chance as for the few miles I did do on the NN it did seem like a very fast and responsive tyre.
  • mate of mine had a NN carcass delaminate on him recently and Schwalbe asked him if he was using Stans (which he wasn't) as they are aware of the incompatibility. He's sent it back fr warranty replacement, I haven't heard the outcome but I suspect they'll just replace it.

That said, I have been using Stans in a 2.4 NN snakeskin for the last year with no problem at all. Perhaps the Snakeskin carcass is more resistant to attack, I don't know

as for rear tyre lewboy, my current fave is the 2.35 Maxxis High Roller although the steel one is heavy (>800gr) and the kevlar version is tough to find in stock anywhere (anyone knows better, give me a link, I want a couple....)

an RR on the front and a NN on the rear!

odd way round to run them. also 40psi is quite high for a tubed tyre.

a good combo is NN front and RR rear as a general condition set up. wetter/muddier then NN front and rear. dryer/dustier then RR front and rear.

i run less than 40psi on my NN with tubes and have never had a problem.

  • when you buy a nobby nic, racing ralph and the furious fred they come with a booklet in side which gives you what tyre combo for any condtion,
