Brake issues

I used to have standard Giant hydraulic brakes all round, but as the front was badly worn, a mate of mine gave me a front set from a GT.
At first it was amazing, then overnight (literally) it just stopped working.
How can it go from being able to stop on a sixpence to not stopping at all!?
All I did was swap the caliper, disc and lever, should I have adjusted it for my bike? The disc does rub on the pad, unlike the old one.
Help!
