A Vision of a Champion is someone who is bent over, drenched with sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when no one else is watching.

Hah, Just flicking through the forum and happened to open this thread. It's on in 10! Time for a break from packing my suitcase (holiday Monday!)

I watched this, and TBH, they mostly rode like complete idiots. The "accidents" looked staged too, like the onboard bike cam when a driver opened his car door straight into them, or when the girl had a big "off" when she tried to turn left. WTF was that all about? Is it really that easy to kill yourself on a fixie?!
Incidentally, why do couriers ride FGSS? I've heard it's cuz they're lighter than gears, but after watching the old guy mash his way up that hill I thought of that killer line in the Youtube MC Spandex "Performance" vid: "A word of advice for all ya hipsters: get yourself some brakes and some shifters"!
Best bit of the show was watching the dude in the Liberace jacket keeping up with traffic on the highway
More TV goodness: Mark Beaumont's Cycle the World thingy is on Eden on Thurs and Fri0 -

Some couriers do ride with gears, it's just a decision they make i guess.
A fixed gear isn't always the lightest option, my fixed is heavier then my full carbon roadie, but then if i was parking that around town i would want a couple of big locks which would probably bump the weight up several kilos.
Also if there's an issue with the geared bike there's more to go wrong, and if you are cycling a lot every day, getting payed by the number of drops you do, and have to carry all your spares with you, the simpler the better.
Yes you sometimes get some tougher hills, but it depends on the city you're working, Central London for example is very flat, I can get around everywhere without issue on my 75GI fixed.
PS. i'm not a courier.0 -

most of london is compared to the rest of the uk bar the fens flat, in that the hills are minor rises etc, and with a SS/FG you never end up is silly huge gear at the lights, as you where chasing down bus/taxi or SCR etc, and got caught by a light.0 -
