Hi, I'm slowly building a Campag 11 speed groupset and am now down to which chainset to buy? Here's the choices
Chorus - £244
Record - £348
Super Record - £399

I think Chorus as it's brill value but anyone with views of why I should spend more?

Cheers

Unless you are hell bent on building a weight weenie bike or want bragging rights, I wouldn't bother spending more than Chorus, personally, as it looks pretty damn similar...

I believe the big price difference is for the ceramic bearings which according to most sources are virtually corrosion proof. Although is it worth £100 for the pleasure?

  • I can't understand Campag's groupsets. Record and Chorus are very similar. They should ditch Record and just have Super Record and Chorus.

And to answer your question - go with Chorus. for the big difference in price you're not really gaining much in performance

I would like the groupset to last maybe 5/6 years that's why I'm tempted by ceramic bearings. It's the the longevity of the the unit I'm interested in rather than the weight. Hmm...dilemmas!

+ 1. Happened as soon as they re-introduced SR imo. I would go for Chorus myself. Had Record before (still love it!) but Chorus is rated highly and great value!

And With Introducing Athena they've muddied the waters even more.

True. I thought it was going to be a cheap way of getting 11 spd - but you have to buy the Chorus cassette, which if you want 11-23 aint cheap. They've got their price points all wrong!

Yes I've got the Chorus Cassette 12-27 from Ribble for £73 which is a cracking deal compared to the list price. I think I'm edging towards the chorus crankset now

    Cheers

  • not sure how much difference it actually makes, but a bloke in a bike shop span 2 sets of cranks, one with ceramic bearings the other without and the ceramic one spun for much longer. now I would guess the less friction in the drive train the better?

It's also the corrosion proof properties of ceramic that appeals to me. I've got a headset where the bearings have rusted within 2 years that needs replacing but £100 extra just seems a little excessive!
