I'm about to buy a new bike but can't choose between the following:

Saracen Tourmalet 2008 Road Bike
Bianchi B4P 1885 TB Hydro Carbon Ultegra 10 speed Double 2008 Road Bike
Pinarello FP1 Sora 2009 Road Bike
Scott Speedster S30 Ultegra 2009 Road Bike

Which offers the best bang for the buck? The below URL's should give some info on they're spec (sorry if this is a bit of a dumb question - I'm only just getting started with road bikes)

    last two links are dead

Scott has a higher spec than the pinarello, from a quick glance.

How do Trek/Spesh/Ribble/Baordman compare at this pricepoint?

  • Whops - that would be my inability to copy and paste! The correct, working links are below

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bia ... e-ec000014

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/sar ... oad%20Bike

Regarding Trek/Spesh/Ribble/Baordman - none of their sub £1000 models appeared to be as good as these four (although I really don't if I am correct or not!)

Which ones have you ridden? And how did they feel? Fit is THE most important thing here not how pretty they look. If a frame doesn't fit you then you will not enjoy your bike.
  • Haven't ridden any of the bikes. At the moment I'm just trying to find out which is best value for money (best overal components)

    Cheers

I think you'd be mad to spend a grand on a bike that comes with sora unless you planned to upgrade in the near future. If you're set on those 4 then my money would be on the Bianchi.

  • Hi Clum84

Thanks for the comment. Can I ask what swings the Bianchi into favour? Better forks / chainset etc? Or is it just personal preference that would make you go for it

Many thanks - you advice is really appreciated

The bianchi and the scott both have nearly full ultegra groups which is beats the 105/sora of the other two bikes. The bianchi also has aksuims which tips it over the scott for me. Also the bianchi is a bianchi! Only seems to be a 49cm in stock though.

If you're spending a grand though have you conisdered things like a focus cayo or planet x sl pro carbon/ribble sportive? all have full carbon frames.

..but, unless I'm mistaken, these cant be ridden first..or is there a testing site for such on-line acquisitions?

I'd ride Bianchi vs Scott and see which tickles the uvula

I have a Pinarello surprise - which is the older equivalent of the FP1. I rate it very very highly, its so stiff , and the acceleration is unbelievable. I would strongly recommend the pinarello - the groupset is a bit low spec (however I have commuted on sora for 3 years without problems) - but frame is more important that groupset.. you could always ask evans for a quote with tiagra/105/SRAM - or look around for someone selling just the frame.

I have recently upgraded to a carbon - but even this hasn't got the raw acceleration of the pinarello.

That bianchi looks a good deal - but is only available in limited sizes (not really a deal at all)

just a thought....there a thread 'cheap carbon frame' i(n road begineers I think)- basically an unbadged carbon frame. - this is £460 from chain reaction cycles- and even cheaper on ebay - you could build that up with SRAM rival, fulcrum wheels.....probably not more than a grand.....

As someone else as said planet x do some cracking deals on carbon/rival - but don't forget the £100 assembly charge.
