Creating an elevation profile from a KML file

Folks,

Anyone know of a simple way to create an elevation profile from a KML file created using Google Earth/directions ?

One would have imagined this would be simple and straightforward but a search doesn't bring up any straightforward answers...

    Ah. There is gpsvisualizer but:
    -the graph that comes out is slightl badly formatted so you don't see the first digit of the distances at the bottom
    - you don't get the running "total ascent so far" numbers
    Any other alternatives ?
