Scott Contessa 30 (09) approx £570 OR Specialized Myka HT Elite (09) £489 or 2010 model is £649. I like both and if I can't find an 09 I might be prepared to pay for the 2010 model. But which is the better bike for the spec ? This is my 1st mountain bike at the age of 51 and I'm a 5'6" woman. Planning to ride railway trails, green/blue bike trails at bike centres until I get really fit. I'm in such a dither as I've ridden both but don't know enough to gauge what is "comfy" or not. Both feel o.k. All help very gratefully received ! I'm teetering and just need a push to buy this ruddy bike and get going. Thanks everyone.

at 5ft 6ins you may be too tall to feel the benefits of a womens specific bike.
what are the specs of the two bikes.ie forks, chainset etc etc.
by the way, i think 51 is a good age0 -
If you can find a 2009 Myka Expert it would be the better value. Really nice spec.
The 2010 Elite gets the addition of hydro discs rather than mecfhanical, but not worth the extra.
I have to say the Scott is best value here.0 -
Hi thanks for the advice, I'm going to throw a 3rd bike into the ring with the Trek 6300 Disc 09 WSD which has a good sales price. Forgive me but I'm not techie so don't know how to attach a link. I think this is it to my comparison site ref spec.

I'm having great fun with this - I haven't bought a bike since my Dad bought me a bike when I was 11. This time I get to choose what I want ! This forum has been a great help esp when store assistants have tried to push me in the direction of duff bikes. Thanks everyone. And yes, turpinr, 51 is a great age. I surfed, skied and played golf (not all at the same time) for the 1st time last year and am now planning to head for those hills with this bike and scare myself silly but with a big grin on my face.0 -
Another vote for the Scott0

oops I forgot about the hydro discs - do you think it's worth paying a bit more to get one with hydro v mechanical ? Scott Contessa 20 perhaps (also in sale). I was on a friend's bike with hydro, braked sharply (walker's dog jumped up at me) and went head over heels with bike on top of me. No damage done but really sharp brakes.0

If you can, have a ride of both, as one may just feel loads better than the other. Maybe not, but if you can have a quick test ride you'll know for certain. You may just prefer how one rides & handles.
With regard to braking, you'll get used to how hard you can brake - also, if you're standing & get your weight back, it's really difficult to go over the bars when you brake.0
