You need a chain tool, or a multitool with one on, and a 9 speed SRAM powerlink. It's worth having a couple of spares too. These let you split the chain without a tool and without having to buy a new pin each time.

    great :D
    I'll pick some up today.
would a spare rear mech hanger be a little overkill to carry about or am i just being a little paranoid with seeing those deraillers hanging off?

Most mech hangers are pretty light so I dont think its a bad idea to keep a spare in your bag.

A m8 of mine keeps a spare with him having bent one in the past.

  • Do powerlinks work ok on shimano chains?
  • Yes!

  • I tend not to carry a spare rear mech . All i do is bypass the mech with a shorter chain length and use as a fixed gear till i get home . Hopefully not at the start of the ride

I do this on my roadbike.Make sure you get a gold one for 9 speed chains.
