Just got back from the pub, where conversation turned to pro cycling and the question as follows:
Regardless of explanation, or need for justification, or others opinions, or who has been nailed for doping, or who may have doped and without any come back on your answer at all, who (just a name) is your favorite rider of all time?

Let me start... Marco Pantani

Hinault, total animal, with Jens V (for shear workrate) a close second. Of course, should mention Eddie M who as a champion is almost untouchable.

    Marco Pantani nowdays

From papers Charly Gaul and Jose Manuel Fuente
If you like Flandes, Roubaix or Eroica, you would like GP Canal de Castilla, www.gpcanaldecastilla.com
  • I feel the need for a top 5 in no particular order

    1. Gaul
    2. Simoni
    3. Pantani
    4. Hinault
    5. Beloki (why, I have no idea, i even named a band after him once!)

    Marco Pantani RIP.
    Powered by Haribo.
  • Sean Kelly!

An honourable mention for Jan Ulrich. In more sentimental moments the video below almost brings a tear to one’s eye!

He's got it all for me. Got the wins, got the panache, got the mardy short bloke syndrome, the family man angle covered, clearly still loves the job, Sidi ask him to help develop shoes... Comsumate pro.

Oh and all his team kits, bar jolly, were ace.

  • Coppi. Fausto not Serse :)
There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...

    Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave!
  • Is Serse Coppi the ugliest man ever to get a pro contract? Or at least the best Nosferatu lookalike?

Det. Sgt. George Carter: Do you know what, Jack? You're full of sh!t.
Det. Insp. Jack Regan: I thought it was about time you made an intellectual contribution to this debate.

Claudio Chiapucci, when I was still young enough to have heroes.
  • Stephen Roche. He only had two or three really good seasons but he was pure class. His riding style was silky smooth and was like watching ballet on a bike (if that doesn't sound too gay).

Let's close our eyes and see what happens

  • The Stephen Roche is very good, one of the first books I read about cycling, so I highly recommend it 'all show no go'
  • Coppi ...... Il Campionissimo

"I've seen C Beams glitter by the Tanhauser Gate............"
  • My top five:

    1. Kelly - for just being hard
    2. Hinault - for never compromising
    3. Merckx - no explanation needed
    4. Jacky Durand - for sheer entertainment (just pipped Jens V)
    5. Paul Kimmage - for (still) spitting in the soup

Can't forgive him the pink TT bike.

At least, I can't forgive him for using it in the tour....

No doubt in my mind, it's Cipo

    Or Hinault

    Or maybe Sean....
