... I know what you mean....I've only come up with one original thread since joining.....ha ha.....

ps -i rode a bike at 4yr - a raleigh which had brakes when pedalling backwards... learnt to skid and wear out tyres
  • Wouldn't listen to my old man when he said a smaller front wheel is unstable and pestered him for one of these Tomahawk's

Puch Clubleader 10 speed. Simplex gearing. It ended up as a 'field' bike
    Powered by Haribo.
  • First bike I can really remember was a 5 speed Carlton Corsa in red circa 1973. Used it for going to/from school until the back wheel was clipped by a moped leaving me on the floor, knocked out with a huge lump on the back of my head...put me off bikes for a bit. Next new bike was a Falcon Laser in white circa 1990 which I still have but don't use currently as it needs a new BB & I have not got round to it. I now use a mountain bike (Claude Butler Cape Wrath) for commuting (slicks not knobblies) & have plans to buy a new road bike, budget & other half permitting!
  • a SUN Massed start
  • 1973 5 speed peugeot racer. loved it.
have recently bought one the same from ebay.

Raleigh Boxer, a yellow one. Didn't have BMX in those days, you went scrambling instead!

First "racer" was a Falcon, it was decked out in faux sponsors logo's. Supposedly to celebrate the Milk Race. Obviously it was lashed together by the shop with whatever stickers were lying about. It had a cottered steel crank, steel everything except the Simplex rear mech, that was plastic. I remember cos the day I got it I threw the rear mech thru the rear spokes because it wasn't adjusted right. That's Halfords for you, aahh somethings never change. This would be 85. All the fun in the world for £99.

I remember fitting QR skewers to it and chopping off the brake lever extension things. That's when ( in my own mind) I turned pro!
  • I was always handed down my older sisters bikes. Raleigh Striker then a Grifter. But my first bike which was truly mine was a Holdsworth Avanti bought brand new for £199 at a shop called BikeUK in Kings Cross, London in 1983. I saved for just under a year to buy it when I was 13 years old. It was painted a deep red, and as we all know, red bikes go faster...

Let's close our eyes and see what happens
  • My first was a Raleigh arena which got me every where and had one of the hard plastic seat, which did not bother me too much at the time

I had a Raleigh Arena as well. Nice metallic blue, with those short mudguards. WTF were they about! Rode it to death when I was a kid, then replaced it with a 10 speed celeste Bianchi. Thought it was the dogs.

Googled, I'm afraid – that's not my pic. My top buddy had a Striker, I got a Trail Blazer... and I'm fairly sure I had shoes like this poor sod too.
