...Well not quite -- went out a few times before my summer holiday, but other than the Shimano MT41s I wasn't wearing any kit or sporting any accessories on the bike. So today was the first "proper" ride.

The kit in question: a pair of Mavic peloton bib shorts, a cheapo Aldi s/s jersey, Spesh BG gel mitts, Giro Monza helmet. The accessories: fitted CatEye light brackets, Trek Incite 8i computer, and one of the cool two cool blue Bontrager bottle holders I got, and matching Camelbak Podium bottle. Also strapped on the small ToPeak wedge saddle pack with a spare tube and CO2 pump inside, then decided I didn't need that as I wasn't going to go far.

My first impressions were definitely positive. The gear change is nice and precise (as I already knew), and the bike feels faster than anything I've ever ridden before (which in terms of road bikes isn't that much). The padding in the bib shorts did make a difference although my one hour stint still left me with some saddle pain. No pain, no gain, I guess, but I'll be curious to see how my other bib shorts, Gore Power III, compare to the Mavics.

I was pleasantly surprised by the above mentioned cheapskate jersey: having never owned any real cycling clothing before, the wicking was very noticeable, and despite a fairly miserable temperature of around 14 degrees and strong winds, the absence of sweaty wet material clinging to my torso helped keep me pretty warm.

One thing disappointed me though: the mitts. They get good reviews in many places, including this forum -- and that's why I bought them. However, the guy in the shop told me that they had to fit very snug ... and I think I overdid it :? After as little as half an hour my left hand starting tingling, which has never happened to me on a bike ride before. I wonder whether I should wait until they stretch a little, or whether I simply have to bite the bullet and get another pair, L instead of M.

The weather forecast for Saturday is looking promising, so I plan to hit the road again -- hopefully find some more interesting route than umpteen laps around the park :)

I have just got some BG Pro Gel mitts.
I got L, instead of M and they have been good, so far.
I wouldn't buy a new pair, I'd just take the old ones back and say they're too tight...

I got some Endura MTB gloves - I am slim, weigh less than 10 stone though am tall (with longish, but not exceptionally so, fingers). The gloves were the first item of clothing I have bought in my whole life that are XL sized. Bike clothing is very wierdly sized.....

Incidentally, I think the idea is that when you wear them off the bike, there should be a little bit of space on the ends of the fingers. If your finger tips are pressed against the glove finger ends when riding, they will get cold.

    Worth a try I guess :)

Thanks Rolf, that's something I'll keep in mind when I buy full finger gloves -- the ones I'm using now are just mitts.
