What mountain bike to buy, and how much to spend?

I need some advice on what mountain bike to purchase and how much to spend. This question has probably been asked a trillion times, but i was getting bogged down trawling through web-sites so i thought i would ask some people who know. I have decided on a hardtail, i am looking for a bike to ride cross country, designated bike courses and generally to and from work. My price range is 5-6 hundred pounds but could push it a bit if a good deal is to be had. Originally i had my heart set on a santa cruz chameleon untill i saw the price tag and that most british dealers only sold the frame. Ive read that Specialized is a safe bet for price and spec rockhopper mainly but i feel there has got to be something better out there. I am more or less a beginner but want something to get me back in the saddle, any suggestions or tips would be much appreciated.

browse around and see what bikes take your fancy, if you are not into serious biking and want a decent bike to get out and about on and still have fun, then a hardtail will be fine.
plenty of choice out there, and 2010 models have made the 09 models bargains to be had.roberts dogs bolx

Had both. Loved both. Very different bikes though. Sounds like the rockhopper would be right for you.0 -
I'm looking for my 1st M/bike, always been a Roadie!! Got to say Merlin are taking my eye! The Malt 4 is under 800, and looks good value to my inexperienced eyes!!..........Waits to be shotdown :?0

I was in the same situation as you a couple of months ago. I got a Giant XTC 3 2009. They are £550 at most places. I love it to bits so recommend having a test ride on one.0

Rockhoppers are great because they are affordable and totally upgradeable to much higher spec. Couldn't recommend a bike more than the hopper.
Though I have always wanted a Chameleon.......0
