Hoy on the road - on yer bike
From the musical chairs thread:-
Hmmm, that's sparked an interesting train of thought.
Would Hoy actually be able to cope on the road? Looking at the size of his thighs and his general physique I'm inclined to think of that more in terms of wondering if Usain Bolt would trouble the podium in a marathon.
I suspect that Hoy would need to loose an awful lot of upper body mass to even start to trouble Kenny van Hummel on the hills.
Just wondered what everyone else's take on it would be.

Unless Sir Chris Hoy is being set up as their sprinter.....
;-)

too big and too old, he is 33 already and im guessing changing physique might not be a short process0

Having seen Chris Hoy on Alpe D'Huez the year the WCPP tackled the Etape for charity... I can exclusively reveal he could not cope on the road."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Haha, that I would have liked to have seen.
BTW Please note before I get flamed to bits, I have a huge amount of respect for the man and his acheivements."Impressive break"

The comparison is not really Usain Bolt in the marathon, it's a 94kg class weightlifter running a marathon.
Fun to imagine but a bit pointless really.0 -
Well of course we have had a precedent this year, pretty unique, of Theo Bos switching from track sprinter (and a better one than Hoy a couple of years ago) to road. He has done OK (not going into the Impey affair debate), although not spectacular. Still Bos was a much leaner, lighter track sprinter with more of a road rider's build than Hoy.0

Hoy used to ride MTB XC events but his body type just means he's suited to track sprinting.0
-
Maybe 5 years ago, with the dedication and time to change is body shape he could have done it, but not now.
Besides. I doubt he would want to, his career is going to start waning soon, time to settle back and think endorsement and commentary deals.0 -
Or a second career as the handiman 'bloke' character you see on these gardening/home make-over programmes on daytime TV. I can just see him cheerfully knocking together a bookshelf out of a couple of bits of left-over MDF to the delight of the co-presenters.0

Over what distance would they both be as good as each other?
1km, no contest for Hoy. 20km, no contest for Cancellara. 10km? 5km?0 -
Some woman on the BBC news channel was speculating about Chris Hoy for Team Sky today.0

Chris Hoy is already on Team Sky...

Yeah, I mean the new soon-to-be-announced road team. She said she was talking to some "insiders" and got some information about Hoy being thier sprinter. :?0

Doubt it, the guy is HUGE
I'm 6'2" and 93kg in this pic... I think he'd struggle with the pace of a pro peloton over 200km.
Would be cool if he could do it though...0 -
I see your point, but people tend to forget about his insane power.
Look at those legs though! :shock:0 -
How did he get his legs that big in the first place?0

You seem to forget that this insane power burns out very quickly!
He's no slouch on the road but by his own admission when I was talking to him, there was no way he could do 100 miles then sprint at the end at a Pro Peloton pace a la Cavendish.
As I said though, it would be ace if he did do it!
His legs have to be seen close up to be believed :shock:0 -
Will.. Through sheer force of wiiiilllllll! Nah, it was weight training and lots of it.
Bhima, nobody forgets about his insane power. That's why he's a 3 time olympic gold medallist in sprint events. You don't get that by being a fat bloke."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Griepel's legs are pretty huge (IMO suspisciously so given his leg size in previous years. Also, have a look at that jaw)
