Anyone else getting them? Or is it just me in Manchester? Luckily, I swapped my deep-v rims for something more stable before leaving the house... Was still getting blown about though.

Struggled to get to 13mph going into the city centre! Got to 30 easy on the way out though. 8) (Could have gone faster probably, but the roads didn't allow it. :() Overtook cyclists going about 5mph and wobbling about, as they struggled to hold the front wheel straight.

Is it just me, or is the wind getting more and more ridiculous as each day goes by...? :?

agreed - the weather is getting stupid. Round here at the moment, if it ain't raining hard it's blowing a gale - and if it ain't blowing a gale, it's raining hard. Sometimes, it does both at the same time..

Looking out to the sea at the moment, I can see white water in the bay, which usually means that the wind is at least force 5...
  • Come to the lakes chaps... Me and APIII off here went for a 3 hour jaunt last friday and got every kind of weather you could imagine. HOwling winds, glorious sunshine, stair-rod rain and so on...

If you don't like the weather, you can always emigrate.
I always record the weather for my rides (sad but true), I average the windspeeds for local weather stations off http://www.weatheronline.co.uk as estimates always exaggerate the headwind!
About 1 in 30 rides exceeds 40kmh (i.e. 25mph) over the last few years.

...but when I spent a year in Sydney a while back, I took great pleasure in pointing out to everyone there that the average annual rainfall in Sydney is twice as much as Dundee.

Rainfall does not matter when it's always hot though.

Did you hear about the whale that washed up in Barry the other day?!? I swear there were white bits floating around in the rain yesterday, mental!

The wind was mega lashing it, it was like a wall, the last time I went in a wind like this was last year where I struggled to get 12mph, at that same struggling I was getting about 18mph, but I did 21 miles today so to get round it I had to not struggle as much so I went about 15-16 mph but some parts got me down to 14, then you had cars nearly crashing into your due to being impatient. Was getting blown all over the road into a sidewind, I wish Garmins could read wind speed I'd have liked to have known what my average headwind speed was.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/12495052

Some of it was like going up hill, I was off the saddle pedalling, felt like 8% gradient , I think I'm happy with my ride today, I feel fresh after it, if I knew I was going to do that distance I'd have done a 35mile loop with some drags in it.

Tbh, I'd rather the wind is lashing all the time like this, we'd all be going around like it was a small breeze eventually. The only reason I went out today was because I seen how strong the wind is and I thought I wanted to test myself in it.
  • WInd was bad this morning up near Leeds Bradford Airport - it always blows up the Chevin. Felt stronger than 36mph up there - I was leaning into the wind on the crosswind section

I'd consider the 60 that's be 100 or so miles for me, 130 if I did the 90. but I can't even afford £12.50 atm!!

So has anyone got an explaination for this weather?

It's been quite warm in the evenings and freeeeezing in the mornings - is it something to do with the extreme temperature changes?

It's God's way of trying to get Sky to hurry up and announce their rider line up for 2010.

Probably just as well - I'm doing the 60 so you'd just be someone else doing it quicker than me

Um ever heard of low pressure, isobars (not food  ) etc? Or have the dumbed down weather forcasts become so ingrained that noone understands more to weather than whether it's raining or not?

Here in Zeeland, Netherlands we always have wind so its usually not something you even think about when going out on the bike either to work, usually 5 to 6 days per week or on the good bike for a good ride out. However, while doing backshift, a one-off to help out in a crisis at work we had a storm. I cycled home at 01.30am in 110 KM/h winds and the heaviest rainfall i,ve ever experienced in my life. At one point i was riding at 9KM/h with the wind blowing me all over the place on the cycle lane. My usual commute time is 30 minutes +- on this occasion i got home in 54 Minutes. I passed one other cyclist who had a normal city bike with panniers on and he could not even ride his bike. Hope he got home ok.

Today I think the winds where stronger, I was not using much effort on my winter bike today, jeans and baggy fleece on aswell as a backpack and I was going along at 31mph on the flat , but into the wind today was a different story, I'm sure it's stronger, I was on the way home going along around 23mph, then I turned left...... it hit me, I was struggling to keep the bike straight and was down to 12-13mph, some cars came by I had to cloose my mouth I looked stupid, the wind was making my face flap about all over the place.

The boots weigh a freakin' ton!
Four days worth of uniform, towel, food, repair stuff...

At least the journey home will be lighter! Although it will be late and crap weather...
