Saris Bones 3 or Mont Blanc S2

I am looking for a new bike rack for a Mondeo hatchback, after reading reviews in cycling plus this month I quite like the look of the Saris Bones and the Mont Blanc S2. Is the S2 better because it has rails to put the wheels in? The cheap rack that I use at the moment allows me to open the boot when the rack is on (and bikes on it, proberbly not recommended but handy if I am careful) would I be able to do this with either of these racks?

i've got the bones 3, got it second hand for 60quid and think it's very good. not overly confident when ive had 2 mountain bikes on it but it takes 3 road bikes no problem. if youre unsure about the wheels just get some bunjy cords and wrap them round to keep them still.

i can't get in the boot with mine on, its hard enough opening the boot to close it when i notice its not closed properly after putting the rack on

Cheers, that may be a factor, I tend to leave the rack on for a while and need to get in the boot. The Saris Bones looks like I will be able to open the boot with it on but its £200+. Will see if anyone has experince with the Mont Blanc.

Got the bones as well and have taken 3 mountain bikes (one of which was made of steel and weighed 27kg  ) to Wales and back. Regularly use it for a couple of bikes for past 2 years. No problems at all.

I've also got a roof rack Thule thingy that grips the wheels and down tube... bloody thing wore through the paint on my down tube and wheels after 100 mile round trip

Now I know to put extra padding but never had any of this with the Bones.

Oh and to keep wheels still I just tie the loose ends of the straps round the wheels (and pedals).

I am getting mixed reports on the Saris, I have a roof rack as well which has been modified to take up to 5 bikes with the front wheels removed, its a pain to get on but sometimes I need to either carry more than 5 (holiday with teh kids) or just want to sling a couple ok bikes on the back and go off somewhere.

Ps... Saris Bones 3 is £120 - £135 not £200 if that helps in your choice. CRC or Wiggle.

  • Hi

I have had the Bones 3 for over 12 months now and not a single problem. Goes on and off in minutes. Very secure. Quite happy to drive with 3 bikes on motorway at 70mph.

  • Same thing here, Bones 3 owner, took me to Scotland and back at the speed limit with no problem.
