    Have a look on www.Parktool.com

There should not be a c clip (or anything) holding the forks once the stem is off

My cane creek headset has a cicular wedge that grips the steerer, I have to use the smallest allen key I can find to lever it out before my forks come loose. Look for a peice of plastic under the spacers and try to get it out.

My brothers mongoose was exactly the same so you may have it too.
  • I will take a photo tomorrow and see if I can up load it there seems to be a plastic cover which I thought might be a c clip. But I didn´t have the knowledge if I could try and take it off.

You usually bash the steerer with a rubber mallet. Though you can try ans prise up the collar.
  • Hey Supersonic

I have been looking at the Zaskar 2009 which looks like a natural progression for me, from the GT Avalanche 1.0 to the Zaskar carbon __???

It is a bit racier than the Avalanche - steeper angles, longer headtube. But light, stif and tough!

smack the fork down with a rubber mallet.

once you get some movement tap the steerer back up and you will then beable to remove the centering ring.

some plus gas might help break the bond.

you are replacing the headset? if yes then damage does not matter does it.

Was just about to suggest that, given the amount of corrosion visible.

  • Ok, was going to clean it only but if you think I should then it might be a better idea if I get some equipment and bits FIRST.
