Hello all

I am cycling more and more and i have just brought an Edge 705 to help me go out on further excursions.

I am just getting to grips with it as i was wondering if anyone could suggest the best map upload for my edge?.

Also i am not the most computer literate, can anyone suggest a website to plan my routes, someone has suggest that i use 'mapsource' i think. is this the best way? do i just upload the route directly through the usb cable once i have created it?

Thanks in advance

There are some good websites out there

    mapmyride
    biketoaster
    bikehike

these are all pretty good you can search for ride on the sites also

    I hope that helps :D

For maps you have a choice between Garmin maps (City Navigator or Topo) or Open Street Maps. The OSM maps are free, but since they rely on users to update it and fill in the holes then there are many, many holes. Some use it, but for me at the moment there are too many holes and I don't have the time (nor indeed am I nerdy enough) to update the maps. I use the Garmin City Navigator maps - they look crap compared to OS maps or even Google maps, but they do the job. Topo maps have contours and bridleways so are the choice if you're going offroad.

Sorry didn't read the question right

+1 for Garmin City Navigator maps these always work well for me
  • Any suggestions how to get rid of warning 'too many waypoints'?

Also when I save a route starting and finishing at home (i.e a circuit) why does the Edge keep trying to send me back home.

And finally, how can I change route names on laptop when Edge attached by USB?

Havent had much joy with mine, just a glorified bike computer that shows I've burned twice as many calories as I have.

Upload a route without too many waypoints?

You need to learn how to use it properly then....

  • Too many waypoints is a known problem, you apparently save as a gpxx file?

And the measurement of calories burned is also known as Garmin wont pay for the right algorithm https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?p=5008

I program VBA yet I find this Garmin Edge far too fiddly.

  • When you put a ride into your Edge, you can either do it as a 'course' or as a 'route'. If you do it as a route, then you put it in as a series of waypoints (maximum 100). 'Too many waypoints' isn't a 'problem' with the Edge, it's a 'problem' with you putting the wrong sort of file on it.

And yes, what you need to do is upload your ride as a course (gpxx) instead of a route.

in the system set up you can change how it calculates the route I will look tonight and let you know as I had that problem
  • http://www.bikely.com is a great website for planning routes. When you've finished drawing your route, save it then export it as a GPX (menu option at the top of the screen). You can copy this gpx file to the gpx directory on your 705 (just connect it with a usb cable and it'll appear as an extra drive). The Garmin uses the file name as the route name so I suggest you give the file a sensible name before loading it up.

You can stop it recalculating your route and sending you straight home. Select menu - settings - routing then set recalculate to OFF.
