Which Shimano Cranks..... 580/590/Deore/LX?

So what is the difference between the Deore 590 and the Deore LX 580?

They both seem to be around the £50 - £60 mark.

The Deore 590 seems to be a 2010 model, but I reckon the Deore LX is the better looking of the two.

Any ideas?

LX is now outdated. its been discontinued. the if the deore is 2010 it will be of the new kind that has had a major rework and is very good. however when LX existed it was above Deore. its hard to say which is better. before i would have said LX straight off, but since deores rework im not so sure.

The LX has hollow arms and is lighter. Also has an alloy middle chainring.

my bike has an lx crank and it is a lot better than my other which has deore

your all basing this on older Deore, i think the new is likely to be better

I`d spend an extra £30 and get SLX.....................

I bought a 590 to replace a 542 on a Stumpy FSR 08 as my bottom bracket was dead and needed new chain rings. It's pretty much the same as the 542.

Thought about the SLX but it was a good £40 more with postage, plus the extra expense of replacing SLX rings in the future, if you pay the extra for the SLX why not the extra £20 for a XT.

The Deore is cheap at CRC. Seems to have a alu middle ring this year too. No weights published. The previous one was 950g.

SLX has a steel composite middle ring.The rings will last better than aluminium.

I say SLX too, I have XT at the mo and when they need replacing I'm going to get SLX as they are a little tougher.

SLX - ive got one on my Cube. I believe that it is a cross between the LX and Saint ??
