I live around Portsmouth, and been thinking about going up to Wales for a long weekend of riding, maybe try out some of the trail centres and such. Never been before, and was wondering where's the best place to go? Would probably prefer to stay in a b&b, but open to ideas.

Prefer South Wales for the driving time, but if its worth driving for longer, may consider it.

Afan would have to be top of my list. Brechfa following close behind. I rode Brechfa on Sunday and it reminded me just how awsome it is.we did a mishmash of all the trails in one/twas AWSOME! Coed y Brenin is often raved about. its top of my to-do list.its also about as far from portsmouth as Wales gets.
    I like bikes and stuff

Coed-y-Brennen is my favourite, I was there last month and did the dragons back, they have made some great changes, especially at the start of the 'Lurch' section and by the end of the ride my face was hurting from my big grin. The visitors centre is superb and has showers.

as you're coming up from portsmouth i'd reccomend doing afan and cwmcarn in a weekend. they're both just off the m4 and less than an hour's driving time between them. but afan/glyncorrwg has got enough rides to keep you entertained for a whole weekend if you fancvied just staying in one place :D campsites at both places aswell

    Hello :D

    I agree with welshkev....

We live in Southampton (so not too far from you!) and - in my humble opinion - I don't think Coed y Brenin is worth the extra miles. I get just as much enjoyment from Afan etc, in fact I actually prefer those trails 8)

  • i rode brecfa ravan last week and it was a great ride but very very boggy is some places pretty undridable. however the huge berms and steep climbs and i mean steep climbs and decents are just about worth the extra effort to get there. Afan has some classic rides W2 is great to get two rides in one with lunch at the Glen'g mountain bike centre (great food and great staff). I did a week of ridiing it last week and my favourite was the wall and whites level. But cmn carn ( spelling is poor ) is great when dry.
  • it is better camping at Glen'g centre rather than afan as it is sheltered and is flat plus it has the cafe/restaurant to hand with beer till late at night on weekends better facilities too. cheers
  • I would go South Wales, every time, The Wall, Whites Level, Cwm Carn, i think North Wales is over rated, the ups don't warrent the downs.
you won't be disappointed going to South Wales, and you'll want to go back.
