A great 'UK' bike, or bike for 'UK' trails? Is the riding that specific here?! Given we have flat XC trails in Norfolk to world class DH tracks in Scotland plus the all out rocky infestation of Wharncliffe, seems a bit of an odd tag!

  • For me that would be 2 options:

    1) Can handle UK rain and mud?
    2) Can handle riding over old ramblers who won't move out the way?

Lol, I agree with number two ;-). But given any downtubed frame can be adapted to run a crudcatcher, full length cables and a lot have decent mud clearance anyway I am not too sure about number one.
  • i allways thought they ment the mud thing too. god knows why

Yeah, like they don't get mud in Germany, North America (not everyone lives in California) or India for that matter. Marketing b*ll*cks if you ask me.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

  • I had this exact problem when buying my bike, I could find lots of UK specific bikes but none that worked in Ireland. So I took a chance on a Meta 5 and luckily it worked out for me

the riding in the UK is great but not necessarily huge, i mean yeah we have some big hills, some really big hills some small mountains maybe even a large mountain or 2 but no alps. i.e not gnarly, we don't have anything like the moab (please correct me if i'm wrong here) so when the marketing says UK specific i would reckon on the following.
      1. Travel; bearing in mind the above travel around 5"/6" for regular squishy bikes, downhill specific bikes will have more. 2. Geometry; angles that suit the type of trails that form the majority of riding here, probably head angles around 69º/68º. 3. Mud; no matter how much we deny it the weather in the UK is frankly shit. so lots of clearance around the wheels, forward facing seat tube slot, crudcatcher bosses, tyres biased toward wet/mud. 4. perhaps a burlier fork (debatable that a through axle fork is needed, but it is demanded)

but really lets face it it is all just marketing spin, cause frankly the above describes most bikes anyway. it's not necessarily what we in the UK need, but more what we demand.

    Disclaimer:

i ride a commie meta 5.5.2 it has the angles, it has the clearance, it has the tyres (now), so ok it doesn't have crudcatcher bosses but hey i don't run a crudcatcher so I'm not arsed about that, i don't have a screw through axle fork but i don't think i need it. really the only thing that a UK specific frame would offer me, yep a forward facing seat tube slot, but i can live with it facing the other way.
    Fancy a brew?
