What shoes...?

Not clip ins... but what's best for riding on standard pedals?

I've been using some old walking shoes up till now but they have no grip on the pedals when they get muddy. My local bike shop recommended a pair with a sole that would allow the studs to help grip better.

They reckoned that BMX shoes from the likes of 'Vans' would do the job.

Any thought?
Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

I got a set of Five Ten Impact 2 Low the other day for when im riding my SX Trail, they are great.

Fit perfectly (size 8.5), lots of padding around the top of the shoe for protection and while the tread is shallow they grip brilliently on both the flat pedels and the dirt (pushing the heavy bike up hills, i was rooted firmly to the floor while my friends are slipping about all over).

    Overall, great set of shoes.

Thanks.... that looks like the sort of thing. I guess the knobbly bits lock the shoes onto the pedal better and stop the shoes from sliding off the pedals. My current shoes have grooves going left to right on the sole... so my feet just zip right off when the going gets slippy.

  • 5.10 are the default trail shoe, very very grippy.

Make sure you've got some decent flat pedals though, wellgo mg-1 are good.

Vans and skate shoes work pretty well too but aren't as waterproof.

I use merrells because they're gore-tex so my feet stay dry and warm, especially in the winter as the wind doesn't go straight through them!

Yeh, if your pedals have pins in them (which most flats do) then the shoes really lock onto them and wont budge in any direction.

  • I'm extremely happy with my Shimano MP56's.
Uber grippy, padded in the right places and keep a lot of water out.

Thanks... saw these on Chainreaction for only £30.

But have heard that Shimano shoes are a bit of a tight fit... some have recommended a size larger than own shoe size. Did you find this?

I own a set of Shimano SPD shoes (forgot which model, they wern't cheap though) and after about 5 months part of the sole has split (the outer area with the tread has broken away from the flatter mid section of the sole).

So when they get replaced I think I'll try a brand other than Shimano.

  • I'm an 8 and my shoes are an 8. Mine fit fine. I've also been wearing them for 18 months and they're still in great condition. If/when they fail I'll replace them with another pair.

I'd still try before I buy if I was you.
  • me its skate shoes as they always have grip

    got sp56 shoes in merlin for £30-size 8 & 9
  • I've been using 5 Ten - Impact 2 Lows for the last 6 months and they have been nothing but brilliant. They have a lot of protection and the level of grip is phenomenal. It's great knowing that the shoe will never slide off the pedal and I get a big confidence boost using them.

Before that I used to just wear standard skate shoes (Etnies, DCs, Nikes) and although they were good comparing the 2 types of shoe makes me realise how dangerous a non biker shoe could be for biking. Just not enough protection on the uppers.

  • +1 for Five Tens and Wellgo MG1's. Brilliant amount of grip with this combo.
