Tubeless tyres - why can't I get them off the rim??

So, my Fleabay Prophet came with tubeless but I sheared the valve off recently and lost the air. I've never taken the tyres off before and not had tubeless before but nothing I do seems to be able to get the tyres off. Is this normal or expected? Or is it a bodge job tubeless and the previous owner has super-glued the tyres to the rim..... :shock:
