Patches or Gooo

Hiya,

Newbie here. Just getting myself kitted up and have a lock and camelbak so far but what should I do about punctures? there seems to be 3 options:

1) Good old puncture repair kit
2) Can of tyre weld or similar
3) Gooo in the tyres to stop punctures before they happen

What's the preferred choice? I was going to go with a can of tyre weld as it's light, simple and I wont need to carry tools or a pump.

Thanks :D

Slime (goo) will not stop all punctures

Tyre weld is rarely used & will not cure all punctures

You can get a tyre liner which will help, as will puncture protected tyres, but you will not stop all punctures with these either.

I carry 2 tubes and a puncture kit (& pump) on the trails, I use the tubes 1st, easier/quicker than a repair on the trials, the repair kit is a back up just in case I use both tubes.

4th option is tubeless tyres with sealant. Works a treat, but can be bloody messy to set up, and you (ideally) need an air-compressor.

Never used tubeless, but was just wondering. What would happen if you ran over some glass for example and got a 4 or 5 mm cut in the tyre, would the sealent still work?

I only ask because I got a flat the other day while out in the middle of nowhere aftering running over some glass. The tyre ended up with a large cut but the tube had only been nicked by the tip of the glass so I was able to fix it.

It's amazing what the sealant will fix. I've had a hole the size of a nail fix itself, but my legs and back did get sprayed with sealant for a few seconds before it sort of coagulated, so to speak.

Have a look on youtube, there's some insane videos of what it will deal with.

Of course, no air-filled tyre is immune from all damage, which is why I carry an innertube in my camelback on long rides, just in case it goes properly Pete Tong.

I got a slice on my rear 1 day after going tubeless. It was about 4mm and the sealant in the tyre didn't seal it worth toffee. The tyre was flat in seconds. I had to yank it all out and put a tibe back in. I was using stans sealant.

However the front has been on about a month now and hasn't had a puncture so I need to stop being lazy and convert the rear back.

i carry a spare tube plus those sticky on patches as a back up. never notice them in the back of the camelback but good to know they are there.

last puncture i had the tyre wall slit wide open and the tube came out and popped on a thorn...very unlucky lol.

i run tubeless for puncture prevention but i carry 2 spare tubes just incasey and i use stick on punture repair patches on the tubes if they need repairs out and about.

so far ive not needed any of the above as the tubeless has been fine.

i would just go with patches simple easy and it works. however nowadays normally i end up getting snake bites so i just get a new innertube and attempt to fix the puncture. also if you have dual ply tire you will get less punctures anyway as the tire is thicker.
