Garmin (dis)Connect?

What's with the Garmin Connect site? I got my new Edge 305 on Monday, two rides since but I can't get them uploaded because the site is either being 'improved' or is completely unavailable. Am I unlucky, or is an apparently great product being let down by rubbish web services?
TBH, this isn't just about training - the Training Center app works fine on the laptop - it's about the whole Google Earth thing so I can view the maps and try to plan newer and (hopefully) more interesting rides, I'm practising for the Pedal For Scotland ride on the 13th of Sep and would llike to keep clear of all the nasty lorries, boy racers etc.
PS newbie to the forum, be gentle with me...
