OK so I'm on my high horse about visibility and safety

How will you be making yourself visisble this winter. What will you be using to make yourself safer.

Me?

- I plan to have a set of light ( front and rear ) on my bike.
- A front and rear set of Knog lights on my helmet.
- Bright jacket - I'm undecided about a jacket yet, but i'll be bright.
- Overshoes
- Helmet - mine is in red.
- Full length gloves. - Undecided, won't be needed until proper winter early next year.
- Continental 4 seasons or Gator Skins.
- The usua assortment ofl full length tights or 3/4 length shorts and bright tops.
- Ear warmer

(In someways I get more excited about commuting in the winter than in the summer...)

    Umm...

Let me see if I can get the full list

Two sets of front lights: Cateye Singlehsot plus and Hope Vision 2
Two sets of rear lights: Cateye 610 and Cateye 1100
    (15 LEDs at the rear!)

    Altura nightvision jacket (yellow)
DHB thermal tights with reflective strips
thinsulate waterproof gloves with reflective strips
Altura dryline pannier with lots of reflective strips
    altura overshoes with.... reflective strips
new bolt on pedal reflectors (my double sided pedals allow them)
Conti city ride tyres (32c) with reflective beading
Buff head / neck warmer - road pattern with.... reflective sections
Thinsulate neck / head warmer where the buff won't be. This has NO reflective bits!
Rear mudguard also has a reflector and reflective strips down both sides, the front one has the strips as well

Specialized Prospero helmet which I am trying to work out where to attach reflective beading.

If you think about that bit in MIB where the lit up tandem goes past? That'll be me :D

Fur-lined 4 inch heel leather boots - in red, with leather insoles, 3/4 sheepskin jacket with matching lined helmet. Red ski gloves and thermal tights (my winter starts in October) :D:D

On a more serious note I'll probably wear what I wear now but with a baselayer and homemade arm warmers, or yellow leggings as armwarmers when I find them

Now that I think about it, I would like a pair of bright yellow football socks. Are they easily found?

KB - you won't be visible enough mate :D:D

 that guy on fire above will be less visible than you! Does having the singleshot on top of the Hope Vision 2 make much difference?! I haven't got one but I'd have thought for that price the Hope Vision 2 should be bright enough by itself?

I have a 4 mile section of pitch black bridleway that needs some serious light. I already had the singleshot and just bought the hope as an additional light, the cateye was... okay for the unlit section but I wanted some more light to be sure.

I'm REALLY hoping that some muppet has the audacity to SMIDSY, with me in that lot. Can you imagine the reaction he'll get? :D

    - 2x Fenix L2d Q5s on the front
    - Cateye nightrider/disco ball on the back
    - Cheap tescos rear light as a backup
    - I have an Altura Nightvision jacket in black which I may wear but I'm tempted to get something orange or yellow now for added visibility
    - I might get some new tyres with scotchlite sidewalls, like the Continential Sport Contact (or something)
    - Rode in 3/4 shorts + undershorts + knee warmers most of last winter but might get some tights depending on how fruity I'm feeling this year
    - Any other reflective items I can attach to my helmet, clothing or bag
    - Maybe a helmet mounted light in addition to my bike mounted lights
    - Might put some scotchlite tape on my frame, cranks and wheels if I can get hold of some

Incidentally, and to add credence to wearing more hi-viz / bright stuff / lights. All last Winter I did notice (and comment upon) how much more room vehicles gave me when over-taking.

I think I'll need to get me some tights. Maybe bibtights if I can find some affordable ones.

And possibly a bright softshell of some kind as for the most part, the hivis raincoat thing (that £50 one that every beginner commuter buys) really is boil-in-the-bag for the likes of me..!

Oh, and new gloves. Fingered but not super-sweat-inducing like my current winter ones - every time I pull my hand out, out comes the lining, too...

For cheap but good bib shorts google nalini as for jackets I can recommend the polaris satellite jacket, warm but not boil in the bag, light bright and cheap.

The reason why helmet lights are great is because stopped at the lights you can aim it at the driver behind/next to you and alert them to your presence...

On the top it depends on the weather but usually a couple of long sleeved tops or Altura windstopper jacket with a short sleeve underneath. For rain a gore-tex top.
Below, baggie shorts or cycle shorts under bikesters in very cold or snowy weather.
Neoprene overshoes in the cold. Goretex ones over those in the rain.
    Woolly hat in sub-zero temperatures.
Various fleece, thermal and/or windstopper gloves (in differing combinations depending on degree of cold or dampness!).
Lumicycle light set comprising two of either 5,10, 20 or 30w bulbs on the front (depending on planned route and length of ride) together with a flashing 5 LED smart lamp. On the back, a Cateye LD600 on the seat post set to flash and an LD1100 on the pannier with one row flashing, the other stable.
Red 5 LED smart light tucked in the back of my collar.
More scotchlite than you can shake a stick at.
White wheel, yellow frame and white (front) and red (rear) reflectors.

I haven't had a near miss in the dark recently but the odd aircraft has tried to land on me.....

    Gore Action tights
    merino base layer
    Northwave Fahernheit winter MTB boots
