I was sent a letter via an attachment a few month ago and have left it in my inbox since, I now need to open the letter but the problem is it was sent using Word 2007 and i only have 2003 (or what ever year it was) so it will not let me open the attachment and sends me a message about upgrading!
Anyone know how i can open it with word?
Thanks for any help.

You should be able to get the free word document viewer.
In fact, it should offer to find and download this for you.
There's also a free plug-in for word 2003 and word XP that lets you open the files.

If you can't find these plugins, and it's not super-confidential, PM me, and I'll convert it word 2003 format for you.

I've got 2007 on my PC. You could send it to me then I can save it as 2003. Get this problem all the time when I send Excel workbooks to my dietician, the NHS haven't upgraded to Office 2007 yet, neither have the charity where I kill time during the day.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

be careful if you're downloading a copy of ms word, most are riddled with malware/viruses.

try downloading open office at www.openoffice.org, its free, decent and i think you can view ms doc's with it

Well. That all depends who and where you are downloading from doesn't it. Of course if you are downloading illegal copies from P2P / torrent networks then obviously there's a fair chance you'll be downloading all kinds of kack and you get what you deserve.

On the other hand, if you download direct from Microsoft or buy from a reputable retail outlet then you will be perfectly fine obviously.

Open Office is a great alternative and only a few beats behind MS Office in terms of functionality and more than good enough in most environments, still a little rough around the edges if you're used to MS Office's spit and polish though. But then bare in mind MS spend most of their R&D budget on Office and a very large proportion of their revenue stream comes from worldwide Office sales. ;)
