Last commute in France

Well folks it was my last trip home from work on the bike, from Guyancort to Versailles, I go back to Blighty for the long weekend and then off to Kiev on Tuesday.
I am thinking of buying a bike over there, Kiev doesn't look the most cyclist friendly of cities, so am thinking of buying a hardtail mountain bike, I think my tourer will get wrecked, there's also good trails around Slavutich where I will be working from Spring onwards.
Pavement cycling is the norm on main roads in Kiev, the pavements are as wide as two lane roads in the UK, so enough room for everyone. They seem to have bought into rampant consumerism over there, so everyone drives a car, very little cycle commuting.
