Brake cable outer metal cap?

Is that little metal cap on the end of a brake cable outer really necessary? I don't really know what they're called, it's just a metal cap that goes on the end of the cable outer with a hole that the inner cable goes through. I can only assume you crimp it on using some certain tool. My question is what are they called and are they really necessary? Will I notice any adverse affects not having one? Currently i've just got the bare cable outter end going straight to my calliper (dual pivot Tektro road brake).

They are called ferrules and they stop your cable outer getting damaged on fit and malforming under tension causing poor shifting and braking performance.

Thanks for the quick response. I've been noticing poor brake performance and wondered if this could be part of the cause. Do I need a certain tool to crimp one onto the end of my cable outer? Or does it just slide on?

Just slides on though some can be a bit tight to fit.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
