Why every morning when I set out just to amble into work and arrive refreshed but not in a sweaty dripping mess, I somehow, have to, just have to, step on the gas, try and beat the 7am bus down Maryhill Road, get to the green light before it changes, hit a new top speed under the canal bridge, catch up on every cyclist i see (or try to!)..... then I arrive at work in a sweaty dripping mess......

No point fighting it. Every day is an opportunity for a new PB, esp if it's blowing a howling gale up the back of your shirt. Go it it, and sweat.

set off 5 minutes earlier to avoid the bus chase?

blinkers to stop you seeing other cyclists?

Remove computer to stop attempting to beat top speed?

To avoid arriving @ work "in a sweaty dripping mess" - take the day off and go for a decent length ride during what should be your work hours?

You try and beat the 7am bus down Maryhill Road too? :o

But I do find that I take it easier on the way home, well to begin with... then... no matter what I try..... it just ..... just .... comes over me again....

 No to Maryhill Road, but I try to beat the lights on my route. I do pootle on the way home as my legs are tired by then, although i reckon toeclips (= more power) would help negate that feeling

not ready for SPDs just yet

Yeah, I've tried pootling near the end of the week as I'm beginning to feel bushed. But then it all goes to pot 30 seconds into the ride.

As CiB said - no point fighting it

Alas I have the same problem - feeling a bit rough this am so I thought I'd just pootle - by the time I got to Station Road I'm in top gear trying to beat the lights and passing a hybrid so fast that he disappeared into a black hole - result sweaty dripping mess - I've been doing this for a year now and still haven't learnt my lesson
