i weigh 18 stone and i'm constantly breaking spokes on my rear wheel. last week i had it properly re-built with stronger spokes. after a couple of rides a few of the spokes are very loose. i'm now thinking i need to get a new wheel with more spokes.

am i correct in thinking i need this? if so do you reccomend 28 or 32 or what? also can you reccomend some good wheels in this bracket.

  • If the wheel has been completely rebuilt, I would recommend you just get the spokes tightened again. May find that they have just become loose from riding on them a few times.

You probably want to get yourself a new wheel built using:

    a) 36 spokes. 32 probably won't cut it.
    b) a strong rim (e.g. Ambrosio Excursion, Mavic CXP33)
    c) a good wheelbuilder (e.g. search these forums!)

However, it could simply be a case of tightening up what you've got. What's your current wheel and who was the guy who "properly rebuilt" it?
  • the wheels are Mavic CXP 22 with custom giant hubs. i got it rebuilt at an lbs shop i trust, although i've never had a wheel rebuilt with them before. i've retightened spokes and i'll see how i get on, on my next ride.
