Giro Indicator seems to be a popular helmet of choice on a budget, can be found for ~£30 (ignore halfords claiming that it is marked down from £80)

am i right in thinking that the more you spend the more compact the helmet gets.i may stretch the budget a bit for something a bit more compact.

Generally speaking more money = better ventilation/lighter weight - NOT better protection per se...

All helmets sold in the UK have to pass the minimum safety level certificates - the extra money goes into stronger materials, which mean they can use less material to meet the safety criteria, which means bigger air vents....

    Make sense?

thanks for the advise,i think a trip to a bike shop is in order to try on different styles.anyone one know of a good bike shop with a range of helmets in the wigan or surruonding areas.why is there always something else to buy,you buy a bike but thats just the beggining

I can endorse the indicator - used to have one, ventilation is nice and works well. Bought a much more expensive Giro Monza, and wish I had just bought another indcator - *sighs*

I have a bell crossfire that I paid 30 Euros for at Decathlon.

The more expensive helmets I had before (E2, Delerium and Sweep XC) were all lighter and better vented but afaik the protection standard is all the same and you get a decent retention system (same as in the Delerium/Sweep iirc) so the Crossfire is, frankly, just fine

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it

    bell slant from halfords
i took all the bell stickers off mine as it looked stupid but the helmet itself is comfy and keeps my head cool and safe

Uvex XP 100 - This is a bit over your budget but I find it a fantastic helmet for the price. Looks a bit like Giro Xen but more comfortable and half the price

I'm a fan of wee pot style helmets so bought a Giro Flak in white. It has reasonably decent ventilation for a wee pot but is, of course, more rugged and better at taking a bashing I'd imagine.

Another thumbs up for the Bell Slant. I tried on every helmet in Halfords and decided on this one. Fits perfectly, nicely adjustable and no weird pressure points unlike quite a few others. Maybe I have a strange shaped head, but this one was by far the most comfortable.
