Shimano IG70 Chain Compatibility

I have an old GT Avalanche MTB, 1997, with a mix of 8 speed XT and LX components. I have a Shimano IG70 chain, which I would like to replace. I may need to replace the cassette too, but just want to start with the chain and see how it goes first. Do I need to buy an IG chain as a replacement, or will any 8 speed chain work just as well? I would rather buy a SRAM or KMC chain, as I use these on my road bike, and prefer the flexibility of the powerlinks for cleaning.

See link. I would get a 7/8 speed chain from whatever brand you prefer. I have also used a 9 speed chain on a 7 speed system with no problems.
