Should I spend money on an old bike?

I've been road cycling for a while now but are thinking of having a go at mountain biking for a change. In the year 2000 I bought a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp bike but have never used except for about 50 miles when I first bought it so it is in a like new condition.
I'm thinking of digging the Specilaized out of retirement and giving it a little freshen up. I have been looking at buying a Shimano XT groupset (Merlin cycles have a good deal on!) New saddle, handlebars, stem etc to bring it up to date but my question is, is it worth spending this amount of money on an old frame even if the frame is like new?
There is nothing really wrong with the old parts but I just like new shiny components.
What you people think? Or should I put the old bike on ebay and go buy another new one!

I'd just service it and ride it! See how it goes.0

if it has suspension, check its not rusted e.t.c. wont work properly, clean it and the ride it, can always use it as a commuter if not up to off road.0

Thanks for your advice! All it needs is a service really. There is no rust or corrosion on any parts even the tyres are like new no splits or cracks as it's been kept in a dry garage.
A project for this weekend I think. Then out with the clubs MTB section!0
