Croatia to London trip

Hi all,

I was wondering if I can pick your brains for some advice please? A friend and I are planning on flying out to Split in Croatia and biking back to London. We are both pretty fit guys, and I used to bike to and from work (9 miles a day in total - ok I suppose!) so we are hoping with the correct training we can get ourselves up to optimum fitness to successfully complete the trip.

However, I am really unsure as to what bike I should be buying for this. Does anyone have any recommendations at all?

Cheers guys,

Rob

    Bob,

    first up welcome :)

You have asked a very broad question which makes a clear resonse a bit difficult.

To advise on a bike it would be good to know a bit more about how you intend to carry out the trip. camping, hotels BandB, hostels or a mix? Will you be on road the whole time or might you head off road? How much are you budgetting for the bike? if you can come back with some more details then I'm sure you will get a few more replies.

One thing is for sure, unless you are very inventive with the route you will need a very low gear as there is a fair bit of climbing between Split and London

    Welcome,
I agree with BE1, it is a broad question. You can ride almost any bike except race bikes, check out http://www.bike-journeys.com/touring_tips/Tips.htm for some tips.
Since you both are prety fit already I wouldn't wory much about training just plan the first few days to be short and after a week you wouldn't even notice the hills.
As far as bikes go you can get by with a hybrid like I did for about 300 euros (or less) it's all down to fit check out this site to get an idea http://sheldonbrown.com/frame-sizing.html
there are other sites just google it.
    cheers
  • Hi guys.

Thanks for your responses and apologies for the delay in responding - that will teach me not to check my Junk Mail!

    To answer your questions:

    BE1:

    - we will be camping when between cities but intend to stay in a cheap hotel / B&B when we hit certain cities.
    - I think the trip will be mostly road.
    - Budget? Probably £400?
