Good stuff, but why not just cycle? Bl00dy lazy sods, no wonder kids these days are overweight...

Whats next, and automatic football playing device that lets you sit on a chair next to the park, maybe an electric walking pair of jeans - just to "help" people walk.... err Its The Wrong Trousers!!

Errrrr, it's about confidence. A friend of mine bought an electric Giant commuter. Recently she replaced it with the normal version. The electric bike helped her to find the confidence to cycle on the hills around here. I'm not saying it is ideal but if it gets people onto bikes, they'll soon realise they don't need the help when they get a bit stronger.

Surely better to get more people cycling via electric bikes than not to have them cycle at all?

I think many people get a 'Leccy to limit sweat and because its cheaper than going through the moped/motorbike route.

After being thoroughly scalped by one on my commute, I can see the point. ezee bikes look the best to me, they do 22mph instead of the legal 15mph limit.

The guy I see is just in normal clothes with a rucksack and a rack blatting along at 20 mph plus not breathing heavily or anything.

The reason why the majority on this forum cycle is because of the psychological buzz it gives from the physical effort we have to put in, that, along with the fitness benefits.

If I wanted it easy I would buy a car again.

The only time I would buy a 'leccy' bike was if my commute was excessively long or my knees/back was totally cream krackered........ and I can never see them getting that bad

Yeah I meant I could see the point for non-bikeists like. I'm happy pedalling usually although by the end of the week maybe some small battery assist would be nice

Also one of these with an electric motor and I could get rid of my car :D

I laughed at that too. People say that about Southampton, lived here all my life and have hardly ever considered it "hilly". There are only about 3 decent hills here to climb and they aint that big.

The Gadget Show did one of those pointless pieces on electric bikes this week. It'll be on Bugger I Missed It somewhere on the 5 web site I expect, but it didn't provide much in the way of info other than 'electric bikes are easier and faster than normal bikes'.

I quite liked what they said and what they showed of them tbh. She, however, appeared to undertake a reversing bin lorry at one point! I could be wrong as I was glancing at the lappy bewteen shots.

I ride one (for those of you who dont already know) because my commute is long and hilly. http://www.wisper.kellsoft.net/
Its ok, a bit slow and heavy, but I would never have attempted the commute on a normal bike and I've now been cycle commuting for over a year.
I still have to work hard as I try to cycle above the speed of the motor on the flat and only rely on the motor when my legs are tired and up steep hills.
Also I don't drive so the bike takes the place of a car.

I saw an electric bike tonight on my way home - from behind it looked like a bloke coasting, but suddenly he was coasting up hill. I casually rolled up alongside him, nearrly made the poor old lad jump out of his skin, and asked him about it. Apparently he'd been out & about most of the day between various villages and sunny Bicester all on one charge. All this time we were chatting doing about 15mph, and he didn't turn his pedals once. It was a nice looking bike, not obviously a leccy one until you drew level, and it did the job of propelling this large farmer type around the lanes.

Speed wasn't up to much tho. Once we'd had our little chat and wished each other well - there's a lot to be said for not being a metropolitan type sometimes - I gave my lightwieght roadie the beans and left him for dead. It was hard not to; he was stuck at 15mph and on a flat empty lane with a slight tailwind 25 is just a doddle. SCRing, on a different plane, or planet maybe. I don't think I'd buy one tbh.
