Hmmm, well I bought my first SRAM chain in 2006 and it came with one. So I'm gonna say a while, ha ha.

I bought one a few months back and it came with one. I think its just the few models at the bottom of the range don't come with one.
  • Hmmmm how weirds, I'm pretty sure my last p991 didnt come with quicky links ahhh maybe my memory is distorted after stacking today hehe

Ahh well all hail the quick links :-D
    I use all 9 inches.

They are sold to shops in big boxes unpackaged too - no powerlinks.
  • SS not sure where I got my last one from may have been as you said a shop just as a chain.
    I use all 9 inches.

Hmm, when I bought several SRAM chains from my LBS, they all came in nondescript plastic baggies, and they all had split-links with them.
  • My 951 purchased a few weeks ago came with one, however I have to advise strongly against buying this chain what a load of shite !!!

I can't honestly condone the use of any SRAM chain. They appear to be made from tissue paper.

Yeah, SRAM and Shimano chains are rubbish. KMC as well.

What you want is a Wipperman Connex 908. Connex have brilliant quick links.
  • Nvere had an issue witth my 991's

Only ordered a new one as I my old one is caught in a tree lol

Wippermann are great, yes. I've also had fantastic results with KMC.
I used to love Sachs chains and split links, and even though they were bought by SRAM, they just aren't the same. The quality has deteriorated terribly.

Basically, I spent a fortune asking for a strong chain, then a stronger one, then a stronger one. Eventually I got "Well try THIS then" and bought a KMC, which has been fine.
I felt quite put out that I wasn't recommended them on at least the second purchase.
  • I'm on my third SRAM 971, two have came in bags and the latest came in a square plastic box. All have included powerlinks and all have been fit-and-forget.

You'll get them on ebay for as little as £12.

    Sachs chains were the business.

Can't say I've ever had any issues with Sram chains, unlike Shimano.

I think a gold-plated Rohloff might be next, just because it's so BLING. And it comes in a velvet-lined presentation case...

    ^^that's just crazy!

Need to get a KMC chain for my new bike now It still has it's SRAM on at the moment. I was just re-fitting the powerlink, and when I squeezed the links together, the chain just deformed in my hand

    Ok, just checking.
I thought that might have been why you were able to bend the links with your bare hands.

  • I've never had a problem with my 991, but then again I am pretty light at just over 60kg. I wonder how much of a difference weight and riding style makes?

using 8 speed, sram seemed smoother, ( the top of the range 8 speed one), where as the KMC one is cheaper, and just works

2 for the price of one, and i seem to wear them out before i break them ( so far)

i normally don't have too much difficulty in breaking chains, but I've currently got a 991 on my DH and trail bike and haven't had to replace it yet!

sometimes the powerlink irritates me though, can't seem to split it at times!
