Chances are he will break something else first. The frame is probably the strongest component on the bike. And its not some flimsy carbon thing, so it will take a fair amount of abuse. Sure, the possibility is that he might fall of and hit it on a rock and dent it, but you take that chance every time you ride, every time you leave the front door.
Let him start, and see if he can find the bikes limit. If he can, then upgrade.0 -
I've got a Meta 55 and it s a great bike for trail riding which is what most MTBers do most of the time. It should be able to handle the occasional D.H. course if you are are careful.....BUT if you are really going to get into a specific sort of MTBing (ie D.Hilling) then you need a specific sort of bike. Especially as the courses are tougher than ever.

He takes it to Fort William! That requires a decent level of bike to get the best from. XC bikes break when people jump and do DH on them.
Again, the much slacker abgles of a DH bike will help tackle a proper DH course.
If it was the occaisional 'light DH' stretch at a trail centre, maybe so, keep the Meta, but this sounds far from that.0 -
I'm just going to bite the bullet. Keep the Meta 5 for hammering the trails. Keep the Meta 4 for dabbling in xc and then buy a cheap dh bike for getting used to dabbling in dh. My mates got a 07 stinky for 500 quid i might just purchaseyeehaamcgee wrote:

Saw a Norco A-line last year for £1000.
And a Stab for £800.
Several Stinkies for between £600 - £1400.
These were all locally, without even venturing onto the interwebs.
i'll repeat myself, when you find a cheap DH bike, let me know.

They are cheap for DH bikes. You are not going to get one for the price of an entry level trail bike like your combi!0

You do realise that £600 will struggle to buy you a set of forks, hubs and brakes for a DH bike right?
To get a stinky for that price (love it or loather it) is a bargain. Especially when it had hope ProII hubs, Diabolous cranks, and 888 forks. :?0 -

well any bike is a big purchase so is expensive. for a bike i too would say 600 is cheap. for a second hand DH bike i'd look to pay between 600 and 1200 depending on condition and spec. for a brand new DH bike i would think anything around 2500 is cheap. so yeah, i was wrong, but to me anyting around 1000 can't be described as cheap. too many beers and forum, bad idea0

The meta will take quite a bit of abuse, it is a commencal after all - they're made for fat people
