Seat position?

I don't get it but a lot of people have their seat pointing up at quite a steep angle. Now, as far as I'm concerned that's just taking up more space where the tackle should be.

Looks painful so why have it like that?

Generally, people do that, when their saddle is set really low in the frame.
Reason being, when your saddle's that low down, and you sit on it, your back, and arse are at a completely different angle to when you've got it up high for "proper" pedalling.

Try it, and you'll see what I mean.

The difference is even more pronounced when you have a tiny dirt jump frame or somehing like that.

  • Yeah yeehaamcgee, I can see what your saying but still looks uncomfortable...must be a bugger to ride the things anywhere. Seen it a lot on the big hit downhill bikes...I guess for the same reason and those guys tend to push the things most places anyway.

Timthetinyhorse...that's what I was kinda guessing :D How cool would you look if you came down a bit hard on a seat like that? Not very! :?

Hmm. You still seem to be missing the point. (scratches head and tries to think of a better weay to explain)
When the seat is that low, then your bum is at an angle which makes the seat comfortable.
Riders who have their seat that low don't sit on it to pedal any great distance.
For example, I often ride all day standing up, with the seat low and out of the way so I can attack the rough stuff with impunity. The seat is only there for when I have a quick rest, basically.
(ironically, the picture of my new bike in my sig has the seat angle set as though I was going for an all-day seated ride, but the seatpost is down low because I'd been leaning over the bike to adjust gears, brakes etc)

DH riders have their seat low and out of the way, because it's only there to prevent you hitting the top tube, and for resting on when coasting, basically.
