They're great, you'll love it, plus there's a good chance you'll handle your bike a fair bit better than most roadies- just treat potholes as if they were rock gardens and keep the MTB 'circular' pedalling motion* and they'll all be well impressed.

I did the same about 2 months ago. It's great !!!
I still ride the mtb as often as I did before (been riding them since about '88 ), but a swift 25mile blast on the road bike does wonders for the fitness, and charging down a hill at 45mph certainly makes your ass twitch !!
I've found that a few roadies have commented on my smooth, circular cadence, something mountain bikers tend to be better at.
After a few weeks of hills on the road bike, you'll be riding away from your mates on the mtb climbs !!
