...'Sean Connery born, 1930'.

What's your desk diary telling you happened on this day? Must be something better than this surely?

  • Mate gave me a new church calendar, he thinks it will save me. Its the thought that counts I guess. It doesnt have anything for today though, but I do check this out every so often.

She had not taken out personal insurance for the attempts, Ms Connors added, but she had taken "a few swimming lessons".

One of cycling relevance - it's Chris Boardman's 41st birthday today.

Edit: August 26th is also the birthday of John Buchan, neatly reminding me that I still haven't got round to reading that copy of 'The Thirty-Nine Steps' that I bought months ago....

Taken from the handy site http://www.businessinberkshire.co.uk/onthisday/ , which also reveals that today is apparently the 1,429th anniversary of the invention of loo paper. :?

    I know I’m a day late but …

… I heard on the radio yesterday that 25 August was the 25th anniversary of Truman Capote’s death; they then had a short biography about him with sound clips
… My cyclist’s calendar has that 25 August is ex-profi Gilbert Duclos-Lasalle’s birthday, he’s now 55 years old
… My email server calendar reminds everyone that on 25 August 2003, newspapers in England reported that playing the bagpipes can lead to deafness, tension and drunkenness

Someone ought to warn Evan Oliphant (with bagpipes and in kilt, below on right)

Desk diary duly burned. If I can't trust it to be able to differentiate between 'attempted invasions' and 'invasions' how can I be sure it's telling me the right day? Anyway, cheer up everyone - it's Friday! - have a good weekend...

Well if he managed to put one foot onto British soil then it's an invasion, even if it failed.

:) I always thought it was Vespasian when it was Claudius anyway  . Aaaaanyway, on this day in 1985 Zola Budd broke the 5000m record at Crystal Palace. She was in our Colours by this time so its OK.

Happy Battle of Crecy day too everyone, another great day when the big stick was taken out of the cupboard and used to give the French yet another sound thrashing

Well, it's the 100th anniversary of my father's birth. Unfortunately, as he died in 1991, he won't be getting a telegram from Mrs Windsor :)

That's right. 30 years ago. It was an item on the 'Today' programme this morning. IIRC it happened in Sligo.

    Nearly forgot this today...*

Kelly Holmes wins the 1,500m gold medal, Athens 2004.

    Well done Ma'am!

Could somebody bump this tomorrow with 'Chop Suey invented in New York, 1896' as I'm out all weekend. You'll have to fill in as best you can Sunday / Monday. Cheers.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

Also on this day in 1963.

On August 28, 1914, World War I spreads from land to sea when the first major naval battle of the conflict breaks out between British and German ships in the North Sea, near the northern coast of Germany.
