Uncle John cable routing

Hello

I have just bought one of these nice frames. Why is the FD cable stop on the right of the down tube? It means that the FD cable meets a standard BB cable guide at an awkward angle and also that the cable has to cross from the left handlebar to the right of the downtube. Bit odd.

Can anyone please explain why the FD cable stop is not on the LHS and how I can get neat routing under the BB please?

Doubtless there is a good reason but I can't work it out. Am I missing something?

Also the address of a supplier for a nice threaded barrel mount for the top would be great.

Regards

Alan

    sounds quite normal to me.
a lot ( if not most road type with mounts on the down tube) of bike have cable that cross on the down tube as it gives better routing around the head tube.

and most shops will have Barrel adjusters.

Hmm. I'm almost sure my XT front mech can take a cable from either angle.
Cable comes up from the BB, and over a cam, then points back downwards again to lock in place. Should be able to take a cable from either the left or right hand side of the BB.

It can also work with a top-tube mounted cable. Marvelous engineering

    Hi Alan

I was about to post on exactly this subject. I picked up my Uncle John Cross on Friday its a lovely frame but I have the same two niggles.

Some bikes have the cables crossed but it is not the norm. The Uncle John has quite a fat downtube and relatively high cable hanger so the cable is very close to the bottom of the downtube as it crosses.

I've fitted a washer between the frame and the cable guide, and its moved the cable away from the frame, but it doesn’t seem the most elegant solution. I was surprised there is no barrel adjuster on the brake hanger. On the planet X site the photos show a barrel adjuster but I think this just sits loosely in the hanger.

It might be worth posting this in the Road Workshop section, I'm sure we are not the only ones to come across this.

    Regards

    Sean.
  • Thanks Sean

I can understand the FD cable stop on RHS but the BB cable guide seems designed to accept the FD cable from the LHS. Cable from the RHS of downtube meets the guide at an acute angle.

I may post on Road if no obvious solution is posted here.

can you get a picture of the underside of the BB posted?
  • Can't get photo at present but thanks for interest.

I have a BB cable guide which is identical to every other one I have seen. I think it is a shimano sp18. The RD section is on the RHS and directs the cable along the chainstay (irrelevant because I have top tube RD routing)

The FD section takes cable from the LHS and directs it up between the chainstays. I don't see how it takes cable from RHS. Perhaps someone knows of a different design of guide.

  • HI

I have checked with Planet X and LBS. The cable guide can take cable fro either side. Still looks weird but works ok.

    Thanks for all the advice

Might be a stupid suggestion, but can't you turn the cable guide the other way?
I had a quick look on my hardtail, and it looks like it just might be possible.
  • Thanks but not possible to turn round guide. Assymetric.

I have it cabled up and it works fine but the cable does rub against the bottom of the downtube as mentioned by SeanT so I'll need to but a washer under the guide.

which guide are you using as the ones from the different gear companies do have slightly different profiles.

Sorry i forget which is the higher one.
