Hi guys, I'm just about to hand over a pile of my hard earned on my first proper road bike. Having done a fair bit of leg work I've pretty much decided on an Onix Bira. Reviews seem pretty scarce which I guess is down to the new frame for 09 so I was just wonderin if anyone had any info.

I've had a short test ride and it felt great, guess I was just hopin to clear any lingerin doubts or something.

Anyway, thanks in advance!!

  • Got mine as Frame and Forks in december and have been running it as a race/sportive bike since march. Have been very impressed with it. Probably not as light or stiff as the Orca, but in terms of value for money, I think it is excellent. I've no complaints using it as a perfomance.

yea i have one too - cant fault it at the price - i upgraded the wheel set to fulcrum fives and love riding it
i got mine at epic cycles - well worht a look
  • Its a great bike (got mine from epic too) Smooth to ride and super smooth to look at. Im looking to upgrade the wheels too but only cos i like the look of the racing 5s.When i ride mine to work i have to keep going to have a look at it! I used to have a scott speedster and on longer rides my shoulders and hands used to ache, no such pains on the onix. What colour you thinking of getting?

I got one as well :D

Bought mine in January as a frame ad forks and then built it up using mostly Campagnolo Record or Fulcrum parts with Racing Zero rims.

I absolutely love it (had a Giant OCR before which is now going to be my winter/grotty weather frame).

As previously stated it's not as light as the Orca (but it is £600 cheaper!) but seems to be a hugely strong frame - I'm 15st (started off the year at 16st) and it feels beautifully stiff and responsive.

    It's also very red/orange

Love mine - can't recommend it enough. I was also able to get a bit of a bargain from a LBS close to the importer's UK office (Orbea occasionally offload some specials to them).

I'm far from being a competitive cyclist but I keep an eye on my times - it has really improved them compared to my Aeron tourer/trainer and the speed on the flat is quite exhilarating.

  • Cheers for that all.

The LBS I'm plannin on gettin it from also deals with Scott and he's gettin the new CR1 in today so I'm goin to have a look at that and then make my decision - unless its spectacular though it'll be the Orbea. I have been lookin at Epic, do they do 0%? I'm quite keen to buy local and the guy has been great, would have prefered finance though.

Think I'm gonna go for white, it was between white and blue but he's a white one in my size in stock at a good price so it seems like its meant to be!

I know three people who have the Orbea Onix, all bought from Whites Cycles in Bexleyheath. He's our Orbea dealer. A great frame/bike for the price.

I bought from Epic, not an Orbea though. They don't do 0% finance, though.

Chrissz, how are you getting on with the racing zero's - thinking of a pair ?

Absolutely love them mate. I'm 15 stone and they' don't flex in the slightest - despite some serious efforts to rip them apart chasing my mate up some steep hills and full-tilt sprints on club runs.

They roll forever and I can usually start a long descent at the back of the group (after paying the weight penalty on the way up) and overtake everyone without pedalling. They feel nice and smooth, responsive yet stiff and, as I said, are so far completely true. I did need to tighten up the bearings slightly after the first 200-odd miles though.

Another thumbs-up for the Onix from me. Totally love mine.

It's not actually red - it's bore a sort of bronze/orange colour - it certainly looks distinctive in the bright sunlight. To be honest I wasn't too sure about the colour at first but now I love it :)

    indeed
  • Went and put my deposit down last night and pick it up on Friday - can't wait!!

The new CR1 is gorgeous though, could quite easily have had my head turned but more money and lower spec. Bring on the Orbea!!

Mate, you wouldn't fall in love with the final cost - I estimate it at a tad over £4k

NEVER, EVER let my Mrs find out :!: Or I'll have no need for the 'love channel' in the saddle :D

Glad you like it - to me it's art 8)

I saw a guy riding what looked like a red one close to Upminster in Essex today. It looked very nice indeed. Gave him a nod too.

I've got the previous Onix in Black and Silver. I think that's quite attractive too, but the new one really does look good in the flesh.

  • First off Andy i hope yo uare doing more than thinking about getting the zero's at the price they cost you had better be sure !!

Secondly Chrissz the bike is stunning wondefull colour ( burnt orange i believe) amazing kit quality must be a treat to ride mate, want to ask you a qustion though i am toying with buying the fulcum fives first: how do you rate the fulcrum wheels? Second What are the equivalents of the fives in other makes? ( just a few will do thanks)

PS: I thought i was a Carbon Tart he...he lol
Look at my topic CARBON DELIGHT, admittedly i just got the bike and didnt have much spare cash to doll it up straight away but i intend to add new wheels, and get the s-works seatpost, and at some point grab me some carbon cages. I have already spent £250 on the Barmac S-Works one peice bar/stem combo and it is sweet and some new GP4000s tyres to look lush on my new rims when i get them.
    Once again nice ride

Glad you like it dude :) Yes, it's a real peach to ride - although at 47 and 15st 3lbs I can't really do it justice. But I love riding the thing - it just feels so 'right'

As to Fulcrum wheels - these are my first set and I have no complaints at all. They seem to be very well designed and manufactured (the quality 'feels' spot-on). As to the 5s - I haven't a clue :!: I don't even know what they equate to with other manufacturers. I have read some reports where people love them but I have also read of some problems with the hub pawl springs. Have a nose around (search :?: ) for more info on here (it's around somewhere) as I can't remember the thread titles.
  • Hi!

I'm from Spain (that's why my english is not the best...).

I have the Onix Tour (with Ultegra SL and Shimano RS20 wheels) in mind... but today I saw the Scott CR1 Team (with Shimano Black 105 and Mavic Aksium)...
Both have a discount, but the Onix costs 100 € (about 80 pounds) less then the Scott.

I'd really like the Onix and would buy it, as the dealer is a nice guy and the mechanic who would help me to adjusting the bike (as i may need longer cranks or stem) is very good (now he is in the Vuelta) and I have no idea of mesuring... (it's my first serious bike) The dealer off the Scott doesn't look very professional and dind't talk about adjusting those aspects of the bikes, and I forgot asking him...

But here everebody says the Scott CR1 is a far better frame then the Onix... what do you guys think about that?

Is there really a big difference?
By the way, i don't really care about weight... if Onix weights a little bit more it's not a handicap for me...

    Thank you very much!
  • nicofiro.....your summary suggests the Onix is the one for you.....good backup service and classy bike.

Ihave a Specialized....but I 'd go for Onix in your situation

    Hola Nico,

    otro español en el foro!!

I think the Onix sounds like the best of those 2 kit wise but one thing you could try doing beforehand is to do a test ride to see if you really like it. Makes sense when you are spending big bucks!!!

Your english is fine by the way!!! :D
