Some cyclists amaze me with technical knowledge

+1 from another saddo here...0 -
Surf-Matt wrote:TBH I'd like to be better at sorting my bikes but while I can do most general stuff, something like fitting a new mech, crankset or similar would fox me.
But it's all about costs to many - my LBS will do the job in half (or less ) time than me and charge less than a third of the hourly rate we charge our clients - so generally it makes sense for them to do it. It also saves on "bike fixing rage" where I try and sort something then make it worse or break it.
I also have a thing for bike shops - I love the smell of new bikes and looking at kit. Total saddo.
Reel in the abuse though folks - no one is better than anyone else.
PS - I actually thought I was posting this in the MTB section - I not actually on here any more - DOH!!! !
Of course you did. You came onto the 'Road' section, went into 'Cakestop' and thought you were on the MTB section. Anyway, at least you've realised your mistake.
Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!.
And before you either reply or PM me again and whinge like a big baby, I suggest you don't confuse me with someone who gives a sh1te."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0 -
Disclaimer - the Cornish are usually friendly folk. All except our bitter ex St Agnes resident Aggie Boy who seems to hate everyone. Especially if they "threaten" his superiority by kicking his arse at surfing - which he thinks he's good at.
I'll try and spot you when I'm next at CP/PT/Aggie - I'll look for the angry little man wearing a Campy jersey over his Gul wetsuit and riding an NSP.
Oh dear. :
Anyway, byeeee everyone else.0 -
Surely we can agree that there is a difference between being able to do your own taxes or defend yourself in court and knowing enough about your bike to be able to effect a simple roadside repair to get you home?
I'd feel pretty bl00dy stupid if I had to ring my girlfriend to come and get me because I didn't know how to tweak my gears or fix a puncture or a snapped chain.
Last I checked there is no AA or RAC for cyclists. Not climber, not sprinter, not rouleur0 -

I always know when I've made my point when someone needs to resort to lying and semantics. Unless of course you can point me in the direction of any mention I've made to anything other than the fact I surf? You are the only one who needs to massage his own inflated ego by constantly mentioning your surfing prowess to the point of boredom. And I'm certainly not the only one to have mentioned that, am I?
Your final sentence is very enlightening with regards to your character. You obviously look down on people who may not have the money or commitment to have the equipment your ego deems necessary. Perhaps they just quite simply want to enjoy the water and the experience. The ethos of surfing has obviously passed you by. It's a shame you're not actually Cornish, you would have been born with it.
As someone involved in PR I would have thought you'd be a cut above being a lying snob.
You're so full of sh1te I'm thinking of getting 'Surfers Against Sewage' to ban you from the sea."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0 -

Eh?! Care to clarify that? My post was not meant to be patronising, and I still do not see any reason for bill57's reply.0 -

Please point out the lie? Come on - where is it? In the last sentence? Don't you mean the THIRD to last sentence? I thought you considered yourself clever? I can imagine you have all the SAS gear so you look like a "real surfer."
Anyway, I have an idea who you are now - didn't take long to find out. Small place St Agnes and surrounding areas. I'm a little surprised I have to say but there you go.
I'm rather keen to see how mouthy you are in person; face to face.
I'm very much looking forward to it in fact. Happy stalking - it seems to make you feel bigger and better while having zero impact on me. Oh and seeing as you know so much about me - why not save me the effort and pop over when you are next around?
Back on topic - if anyone thinks changing a road bike tyre is a bit tricky, try a buggy tyre - whoever designed them is genuinely evil.0 -

If it makes any difference, I didn't read your post that way. Being insulted for not being into bike mechanics is odd to say the least, but then internet forums are littered with kranks.0 -
Man, you guys really hate each other don't you.0

Actually no - I was "attacked" several times by this oddball and finally reliated. I'm trying to find why but can only come up with something involving a very large chip and a shoulder.0 -

Surf-Matt.
I hear your Doctor thinks you're paranoid. He didn't say it but you know he's thinking it."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0 -

What if your graphics card is overheating or a bit of solder on your MOBO is a bit squiffy, you know how to repair all that?
That's kind of asking whether your amateur bike mechanic would be able to weld up a bike frame and produce the components from scratch. It comes in grades - the components are produced to be adjusted and maintained by anyone who can be arsed to read a few paragraphs - just as a computer can be slotted together by an amateur with brief background reading. The things you suggest are a bit too in depth for the amateur.0 -

My comment was intended to be more general that just directed at you Surf-Matt. I've never been on a forum where members could be so aggressive toward each other simply because one person would rather pay a professional that do a job himself. It's his money he can spend it how he wants.
Some people just need to take things easy, you're getting so angry about nothig.0 -
Salmon - very true. In fact I got sick of the roadie section of BR and apart from this "slip up" am sticking to the much friendlier MTB section. The attitudes in here suck.
Similar with some running forums - you get people that take it too seriously and ruin it for everyone else. Just cycle, run, whatever and have a laugh - we don't HAVE to cycle - it's usually done for fun/fitness not to have a big strop on at everyone else. I think it's misguided "competitiveness" and I bet the most aggressive are actually a big cr4p anyway.0 -
Glad it's not just me then.0

has it ever occurred to you that the problem might lie with you - rather than everyone else..??0 -

I can't speak for Matt but it could be me I accept that. I seem to get on OK on other forums and TBH I was talking about how people responded to each other rather than comments directed at me personally.
I've only been a member for a few months but the amount of anger and aggression that people show at each other I find astounding.0 -
Salmon/Matt...I agree with you.
The nob factor on the MTB boards is around 1 nob per 9 non nob. Seems like it's the other way around on the roadie boards.
It's a shame really as it just reinforces the stereotyping.
And before anyone accuses me of trying to start/fuel some roadie v MTB debate I ride road and off road in equal measures and enjoy both in equal measures.
I just encounter more roadie nobs than MTB nobs. And that's on these boards and in the real world.Whyte 905 (2009)

so you wouldn't be suprised to learn that I find exactly the opposite, most of the time.
In most cases though, the bike is not the problem - the rider is. I think smurf-matt is a pretty good example of that.....0 -
Running multiple bikes could be very expensive if you have to rely upon a bike shop. I have way over £500 worth of tools (collected over years - park, campag, shimano and some cheaper ones...) and can do all jobs.
Bikes aren't technical really...... give it a go.0 -
